Well, if you examine the pulps carefully, Savage had to be around 6'6" or more and probably close to 260lbs. It was only his height that made him seemed proportionate to a normal athlete, he was always described as being rather loomingly larger than the other characters - including the Fabulous Five.
Like most comic and many pulp characters, Savage WAS built like a body builder; or rather, as body builders WISH they were built.

I LOVE the good Doctor, one of my favorite figures of fiction. I also thought The Shadow was pretty good, if more a TV-Movie than a big screen flick. If the movie is faithful to the pulp (unlike the previous film, The Man of Bronze) I will be happy. Whether or not the shuffling herd of imbeciles we call 'the public' like it is another matter, but as you might be able to garner I am not too concerned with what they think.

Most people have no idea who Doc was, I believe he is described as the Grandfather of the superheros. If you think you know nothing about Doc Savage you're probably mistaken. You most likely have seen tons of rip-offs of Doc over the years. Superman's Fortress of Solitude, strangely came after Doc's arctic refuge was described well before Superman. Virtually every gadget of James Bond as well as The Avengers and several other more well known characters. (belt buckle grappling hook, autogyro, cane sword (carried by Ham of the Fab Five) New viewers beware, Doc was a huge believer in not taking human life, you will probably have plenty of hand to hand violence but a lack of bloodshed. If you've never read a Doc Savage story, you should pick one up, doesn't really matter which one. Each novel has a quick rundown of Doc and the Fab Five, since they were originally written as pulps. I hope they do the legacy justice with this film, I was one of the more disappointed 13 year olds who viewed the original film in the 70's. I agree the actor who plays Doc doesn't need to be a bodybuilder, Doc was taller than average with basically a perfect physique that he did not dress to show. A fit believable actor is the way to go. Personally hope they get it right, and I'll be first in line either way!

Big fan of Doc and the boys, and have hoped for a non-camp film version. Hated the Pal movie. Very glad they plan to keep the story in the '30s. It could be the next Indiana Jones type adventure series.

I loved reading the Doc Savage "novels" (actually, paperback reprints of the 1930s and 40s pulp magazine adventures) when I was a teenager, and remember how bitterly disappointed I was in the George Pal-produced "Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze" starring Ron Ely. I thought Kurtzman and Orci did a fantastic job updating and reinventing "Star Trek," and hope they, along with Shane Black, will bring the same level of energy and enthusiasm to Doc Savage. Done well, it could be a long-running franchise.

More than familiar with the Doc Savage character and Arnold Schwarzenegger was never a good choice. That makes is easy to say, "No, I'm not sad that Arnie isn't available."<br><br>However, Jason Statham is available. He has the proper look, low-emotion acting style, and physical presence to pull it off. He'll need a dialog coach though. <br><br>On a side note: The word "seemingly" is key in "seemingly invincible and perfect genius." The character as written wasn't invincible or a perfect genius. A major flaw was in keeping everything too close to his chest and not wishing to put the aides in harm's way. The aides were also there to allow the author to have action in more than one locale at a time.

Hell, I'm VERY excited about a new Doc movie -- if it's done well and has the right stars (i.e. no emotionless, muscle-bound athletes like Schwarzenegger or the Rock as Doc)! <br><br>And while Doc is "seemingly invincible", so is Batman, Indiana JOnes and most of the other heroes out there. But they can also be killed by a bullet or any other means. So it would only be boring IF it's written that way, just like Batman Begins and any part of Dark Knight without the Joker.<br><br>A new Doc movie is GREAT news!
