[Editor's Note: Here is a cool little feature playing over on my other site, The Modern Guy that just seems to fit in perfectly here at Film School Rejects.]

The Modern Guy's Seven Days of Summer MoviesIt is no secret that the world of film kicks it into high gear during the summer months. Kids are off school, parents are ready to pull their hair out, and we are all getting out of the house a little bit more. And what better way to celebrate the rites of summer than to check into your local, well air conditioned cineplex and enjoy one of many great summer blockbusters! Here at the Modern Guy, I am with you. I love movies just as much as the next blogger, and we want to ensure that you get exactly what you pay for when it comes to the summer of cinema. That is why I am happy to present to you The Modern Guy’s Seven Days of Summer Movies, a feature that will preview for you the best of this summer’s silver screen stories and give you a good idea of what you should, and more importantly shouldn’t be excited about. And just for fun, I have broken things down into 7 days and 8 fun categories. Within the categories I will give you the rundown of what you should look forward to in the months of June, July and August. Here is a rundown of what you will be seeing over the next 7 days:

Tuesday - Fun for Everyone

  • I will preview the best films for the entire family. From animated race cars to houses that eat people to kids that eat worms, there is something here that the entire family can enjoy.

Wednesday - The Fanboy Extravaganza

  • There are those odd folks out there who eat, sleep and breath comic books. Hollywood has also found, through the recent successes of films like X-Men, that these “fanboys” also dig movies as well. This summer is saturated with films that fanboys and cult followers have salivating over for a long time.

Thursday - Sequels and Remakes, oh my!

  • If you though that it was unnecessary for Hollywood to remake films like King Kong and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or if you agree with everyone in saying that they could have left Dukes of Hazzard alone, then wait ’til you see what is in store for us this year. Plenty of swash-buckling, street racing, flowing locks of South Beach hair laden fun awaits us as Hollywood continues to prove the theory that they are running out of good ideas.

Friday - Hours of Mindless Fun

  • Wedding Crashers, Waiting, The 40 Year Old Virgin; just a few examples of movies that made us laugh without having to think to hard in 2005. Summer never fails to have a few flicks that provide hours of mindless fun at the expense of poop and fart jokes, gratuitous sexual conduct and a half naked Amy Smart. The summer of ‘06 is ready to fulfill this same promise to moviegoers, but in a possibly more intelligent manner… Well, minus the intelligent part.

Saturday - Movies that May Matter in March

  • Everyone knows the tricks that companies have for trying to get their films noticed by the Academy. One way is to wait until the fall to release their flick so that it is fresh in the minds of those who vote for who will receive that cute little golden guy come March. This usually means that the well of quality cinema dries up during the middle of the summer, but this year there are a few films that the seasoned cinemarati may be chirping about come time to say hey to Oscar.

Sunday - Below the Radar

  • Not every movie has the release presence of Lord of the Rings and shows on 1,500 screens the first weekend. Some films start in very limited release and are only found once they hit the shelves of our local retailers. I will attempt to dig up all of the best films that will be seen on a much more limited scale than others, but will still have a huge impact on our enjoyment at the box office.

Monday - Torture Porn and Chick Flicks, Nature’s Winning Combo

  • To round out the week, I have decided to combine two genres that usually cause a “physical” reaction for moviegoers. Summer is just as great of a time to take a date to the local cineplex as it is to get 4 of your buddies and see who will get the most grossed out by human limbs being flung around on screen. And of course, this summer has plenty of romance, laughs, death and destruction to provide enough fun for any taste.

I know what you are thinking… “Alright, so you are going to tell us what to go see this summer. Then what?”

Well, then you are on your own. Which films you see are completely up to you. I can’t guarantee that every movie on my list will be good, but I can guarantee that they will be released. Worst case scenario, we will all see a lot of movies and eat a lot of popcorn. And what could be more fun than that…
