‘Season of the Witch’ Teaser May Make You Wish It Was A ‘Halloween III’ Remake

I don’t know quite what to make of the first teaser for Season of the Witch. Watch it and then we’ll talk…

Admittedly, this is a teaser so it’s difficult to get a real sense of what to expect from the film, but I’m currently both horrified and curious. The plot synopsis per IMDB states that “14th-century knights transport a suspected witch to a monastery, where monks deduce her powers could be the source of the Black Plague.” Seems pretty straight forward I guess, but something just doesn’t feel right here… ah yes…

Nicolas Cage.

I have no plans to turn this little post into an anti-Cage rant, but few actors can take me out of a movie quicker than Nicolas “His soul’s still dancing!” Cage. From his bewildering hair pieces to his lackadaisical facial expressions the man just hasn’t been a captivating actor in well over a decade now. (Although I did enjoy 2005’s The Weather Man.) I can’t say what kind of film suits him best, but I’m pretty sure period horror isn’t it. On the plus side though, it’s nice to see Cage recycling his mullet from Con-Air.

Cage aside, Season of the Witch has two other immediate strikes against it in the form of director Dominic Sena and actor Ron Perlman. Before you get all huffy on me about Perlman think about the last really good movie he was in that didn’t involve pounds of red prosthetics. Go ahead, I’ll wait… but the answer is 2002’s Blade II, and that’s the one truly entertaining film in a sea of shite. The man has fared much better in the world of videogame voiceovers. And Sena? The evidence against him is basically his last three features… Whiteout, Swordfish, Gone In Sixty Seconds.

The makeup effects look pretty cool though.

What do you think of the teaser?

  • dude, Ron Perlman is holding it down on Sons of Anarchy. but in regards to this 'teaser', all it tells me is, "i want to be a direct to DVD release."

I want to agree 100% with your opinion of Cage, but he was really good in Adaptation. It actually pissed me off to see that he can be a good actor. He'll be awful in this movie, but I'm looking forward to seeing him in Kick-Ass.
  • looks more like a tv ad than a teaser
