Searchlight to Release Choke on August 1

Based on one of Chuck Palahniuk’s popular novel, Choke was one of my favorite films to come out of Sundance 2008. In fact, it even made my list of the Ten Best Films of Sundance ‘08. With great performances from Sam Rockwell, Anjelica Huston and Kelly Macdonald (No Country for Old Men), it was funny, twisted and immensely entertaining.
On top of all that, we now know when the damn thing will be released. Fox Searchlight announced yesterday that they will release Choke on August 1, 2008. The film will have a limited platform release, similar to films like Waitress and Juno, whereas it will start in New York and LA and then move on to over smaller cities week after week.
As well, if we know anything about Fox Searchlight, I would expect a solid marketing campaign behind this quirky dark comedy. Hopefully they put it out there a little more than they did with The Darjeeling Limited last year, a great film that only ever made it into 700 theaters. Time will tell, but either way this is a film you should add to your watch list for 2008.
Note: The image to the right is not actually from the film. It is just star Sam Rockwell looking like a wookie at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. If you’d like to find out more about Choke, check out my review or our preview page.
