Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Michael Cera

The Hollywood Reporter reported (heh) today and it was confirmed by Edgar Wright himself that super hottie Mary Elizabeth Winstead has joined the cast of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. The film will follow the adventures of Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera), a slacker teen, who aims to win the heart of dream girl Winstead. The only thing standing between him and his ultimate goal, however, are her seven ex-boyfriends, who he must defeat. Sound nuts? Totally. The project is an adaptation of the trade paperback collection “Scott Pilgrim Volume 1: Precious Little Life” written by Bryan Lee O’Malley. Michael Bacall and Edgar Wright penned the screenplay, and Wright will direct.

For a funny little side story, when THR ran their story they featured this line:

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is in negotiations to star opposite Michael Cera in Universal’s “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” Edgar Wright is directing the adventure romance.

Within hours, Edgar Wright had posted this to his MySpace page:

“Edgar Wright is directing the adventure romance…”
Well, I am definitely directing, but am not sure about the ‘adventure romance’ bit.
Makes it sound like FOOL’S GOLD or something.
Don’t quite know where this comes from but it’s not summing up Bryan Lee O’ Malley’s masterwork in quite the same succinct fashion as the ‘rom zom com’ did for SHAUN.
I must think of a more perfect pithy description for this film.
It’s a fight movie. It’s a date movie. It’s…
I’ll get back to you.
Anyway Winstead is in.

Funny stuff. When you write about the work of others, you have to choose your words carefully. Here, The Hollywood Reporter got called out, which is kind of funny to some of us Rejects, though we acknowledge that everyone makes mistakes. Except for us. (Kidding)

But this whole hullabaloo got me thinking – Just what in the hell is Scott Pilgrim? So I did some sleuthing and this project seems pretty effin badass. The original Volume 1 followed the journey of Scott Pilgrim, a young slacker Canadian and bassist for the band Sex Bob-omb. He works as a dishwasher. His love interest, a hot little number called Ramona Victoria Flowers (Winstead) is a 24 year old Amazon.ca worker who can travel through subspace and just happens to have seven evil ex-boyfriends.

And not evil in a like, called her names or steal lunch money or even take pithy revenge kind of evil. No, we’re talking guys who can summon demons, pro-skateboarders (I know, evil, right?), psychic powers, a set of evil twins, and an evil mastermind. That is a boat load of evil.

So really this project is coming out of nowhere to me and sounds pretty awesome. Michael Cera, bassist, doing battle against a cadre of evil young villains. Awesome. From what I gather, there is also a lot of band rivalries going on, which may lead to some epic Battle of the Bands, but I don’t know. A cool side note is apparently Ramona’s character (Winstead) is prone to frequently changing her hairstyle, so we might get treated to a lot of sexy different looks from Mary, which I am all for. Yes please.

So what did we learn today? Mary Elizabeth Winstead has been cast in Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Edgar Wright, director, reads the trade news and will correct you immediately if your wrong. This movie sounds badass.

Class dismissed.
