panic-attack-header

This one goes out to those of you who are clamoring for a sequel to this year’s sci-fi surprise District 9. Sam Raimi and his Ghost House Pictures shingle have won the rights to Panic Attack!, a short film concept by Uruguayan filmmaker Federico Alvarez. The short, which has been tearing up the YouTubes for months now, is reminiscent of Alive in Joburg, the short that director Neill Blomkamp used to get the attention of Peter Jackson, leading to the production of District 9.

According to Uruguayan newspaper El Pais, with help from the folks at Film Junk, Alvarez has signed a deal with Ghost House that will allow him to make a feature-length version of Panic Attack! on a budget of $30-40 million. According to the report, Raimi spoke with Alvarez over the phone and the two seemed to hit if off. The idea is to recreate the relationship between Jackson and Blomkamp, allowing Raimi to handle the business side of things and Alvarez to handle the creative without getting caught up in studio politics, etc.

For the most part, this may seem like a rip-off of the District 9 formula — big time producer plucks YouTube sensation out of the great nothing that is the internet and gives them $40 million to make an effects-driven sci-fi film that makes Michael Bay look like he wastes more money than Bernie Madoff. But then again, I don’t see this as being a bad thing. By this process, we are seeing talented young filmmakers getting a chance to put their creative visions on screen with the help of established, successful producers. There is no real downside to that. Here’s hoping that Raimi and Alvarez can deliver something special, just as Jackson and Blomkamp did earlier this year.

Raimi, if you don't pick up on this you're an a-hole. District 9 cost $30M and grossed $203.6M world wide. You've got to realize that the indie film makers are the ones with original ideas. They don't have the big studios telling them "that will never work", they just do it.
Oh, and Sam, stick Bruce Campbell in it.

Why doesn't somebody do a short of a view through a submarine persicope that shows cruise missles launching from a submersible and impacting places like The Forbidden City, P'yong Y'ang North Korea, New Dehli, Harare Zimbabwe, Caracas Venezuela, Rangoon Mynamar and then cut to a badly transmitted/jammed media reoprting of these events with the closing line
"they have not been identified and they say if we don't agree to their demands in 24 hours they'll blow us all to hell and gone"?????
  • iv never been fond of robot movies but i am fond of raimi and i like his thought process with this like johny_boy stated. hopefully it will be a good movie with a surprise evil dead 4 teaser trailer (just dreaming).

Meh, this was alright. I liked Alive in.. better than though, it wasn't just blowing stuff up. I think there is a better short on youtube in a similar vein called What's in the Box done by a couple of Dutch students.

Yeah Alive had more of a story. This is a cool short clip and very well done, but I don't really want to see what happened before or after any more than this. Its very complete. Alive was like the tip of something bigger

i dont understand how these independent guys can do spfx this good with little to no money, yet when a vampire runs quickly in twilight it looks like they used windows movie maker.
  • No comments on this piece? This was an astounding short clip that I featured on my site awhile ago and deserves to see a large scale feature. I'm not particularly impressed with what Ghost House Pictures has done to date, but hey... they've got a good jump in the right direction.
