Sam Mendes Finds God, Told To Direct ‘Preacher’

Much like God Himself, I’ll believe this film is happening when I actually see it.

Sam Mendes has signed on to direct a film adaption of the comic book series Preacher, created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. This is only the latest in a series of false teases regarding a cinematic translation of Preacher. Since the comic ended its five year run in 2000, Kevin Smith, Mark Steven Johnson, and HBO have all expressed interest in the property, some going so far as to budget the film, cast the lead, and start lining up guest directors. This announcement has just as much cache as the others, and since they all eventually fizzled out I won’t be holding my breath.

Preacher is about Jesse Custer, a preacher in the small Texas town of Annville, who is struck by a ball of fire falling from the sky and accidentally possessed by an entity named Genesis. The incident kills his entire congregation, provides Custer with supernatural powers, and sends him off on a quest to find God after he discovers that the deity had abandoned humanity shortly after creating the world. He’s joined by his hot ex-girlfriend, Tulip, and his new Irish vampire friend, Cassidy. The series is violent, sexy, hilarious, and thought provoking…

…And it’ll never fit properly into a single two hour movie. I was most thrilled back when the plan was to turn the comic into a series on HBO, with each episode covering the events of a single issue. There’s way too much information and activity to cram into one movie. Mendes (American Beauty, Jarhead) is a talented director with a strong visual sense, but is that enough to make a worthwhile Preacher film? Sadly, no it’s not.

Are you interested in seeing a Preacher feature film? Who do you see as Jesse Custer and the gang?

Right, its better if he doesn't even try.

As long as Ennis scripts, the film will be in good hands I believe. As for actors...
    Jessie Custer: Dylan McDermott
    Tulip: Elizabeth Banks
    Cassidy: Robert Carlyle
Saint of Killers: Tommy Lee Jones
    Herr Starr: Patrick Stewart

If it gets more outsiders to read the excellent comic, i dont care.

Is Sam Mendes is out of control? Definitely. Should he be directing a live action version of Preacher? Oh yea. Will it be one million times better than anything Mark Steven Johnson has ever done? You better believe it. Why am I asking questions and then answering them? Cuz I like to party.
  • I'm going to get crapped on for saying this, but i don't think Preacher ended well. Once the three main characters went their separate ways, when Jesse became a sheriff, well, the story just sputtered out (in my opinion). It felt like Garth Ennis took the characters on a little side trip, each doing there own thing, which would have been interesting for few issues. But then this tangent kept going and going and going, and he never got them back to where they were, and the series never really finished all that it had started. I felt that the last few issues, where he finally did bring the characters back together again, were rushed and forced. It was as if he had a deadline to finish the series by a certain number (wasn't it 60 issues?) and had to scramble to "wrap it up in time". Anyway, that's just my opinion. I lived the series, I loved how it started, i loved the characters, the humour, the violence, the concepts and stories, I was just disappointed in how it ended. - - That said, a movie, not even a trilogy could do this series justice. I want to see it as a long running TV series. That's my "want". Thanks ~~ Senseless Babble
