Rumor Market: Colin Farrell as Watson in Ritchie’s ‘Holmes’?

Colin Farrell as Dr. Watson in Sherlock Holmes?

If there is one thing that we in the world of internet movie journalism do well (or not so well, depending on who you ask), it is feed on crazy rumors about all of the most anticipated projects in development. And it appears that Guy Ritchie’s production of Sherlock Holmes, which has Robert Downey Jr. set to star in the title role, is quickly becoming one of those projects. Not too long ago, rumors emerged that Russell Crowe was in talks to play Holmes’ sidekick Dr. Watson, but that was quickly turned around by studio sources.

Since then, more details have emerged from Latino Review, saying that Crowe could be in the movie, but as Professor Moriary instead. That leaves the role of Watson still to be set. Today, “sources” are telling the folks at JoBlo that Colin Farrell is in talks to star alongside Downey’s Holmes as Watson. While no official word has been said, this would be an interesting development. Farrell certainly wouldn’t be the first name I would think of when thinking about casting Watson, but then again, I wasn’t thinking about Downey as Holmes when he was picked. But before we get to that discussion, it is important to gauge this rumors validity. That leads me to my question:

Colin Farrell as Dr. Watson is Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movie — are you buying it?

Please no Colin Farrell his not that great of an actor & this isn't Bad Boys III
  • Farrell changed my opinion of him with his performance from In Bruges. I could see him playing the part, so long as he is willing to let Downey Jr. take the spotlight.
  • After seeing RDJ in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Iron Man and Colin Ferrell in In Bruges, I have no doubt that putting these two together would be fantastic. They're both aggressive and witty when they play their characters, so a collaboration would be VERY interesting to see.

After seeing him ride that chick in Alexander and to see his private parts, I want to see him in anything...As long as he's nude.

Wow! One OKAY performance in In Bruges and you guys are on the Colin Farrell bandwagon. I actually want this guy to be good, but he just sucks in everything. I don't want that Irish bugger near this film.

I've only seen parts of In bruge agree, however there's more good.. A home at the end of the world and Cassandra's dream are 2 good movies.

For the record, I've always been a Colin Ferrell fan, but his performance in In Bruges actually surprised me and I can see how that kind of light hearted focus he displayed in the film would work for Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes.
  • I always imagined Watson as being an older, mentor figure to Sherlock Holmes. The idea of Drunky McIrish mentoring anyone is laughable.

I loved Farrell on Scrubs though.

Pride and Glory looks great, In Bruges was awesome and The New World is one of the best films there is... Give Colin the part!

I'd buy Farrell being Watson over Crowe. He might not be as solid an actor as RDJ is right now, but he was good in In Bruges and I hope he keeps the Irish accent which would make Watson even more interesting. However Professor Moriarty is an old withered man something Crowe clearly can't play, so I think they should rethink the bad guy.
