Rumor: Brandon Routh is Superman No More! Updated!

Posted by Robert Fure (robert@filmschoolrejects.com) on January 5, 2008

LatinoReview is saying that they’ve known for some time now that Brandon Routh would be stepping down as Superman before the next installment of the franchise went before the lens. Variety has gone on to confirm that, so bye-bye Brandon.

The absolute why of this is unknown, though it may be related to relatively disappointing box office returns or the fact that Brandon Routh was terrible as Superman. His Clark Kent was fine, but his Superman was basically just Clark Kent, all sort of emo and weepy and lame, instead of being a charismatic hero like we know Supes to be. Now if they just get rid of Bryan Singer, the next installment will be great!

It’s still unknown as to who will be donning the red undies or if they’ll be Supes in both the upcoming JLA film and the next Superman, so stay tuned in for details.

UPDATE!:

Our friends over at AICN just threw a wrench into the rumor above that Brandon Routh will not be Superman in the next film. Here is what they had to say:

“I just got off the phone with a very high-ranking mole who is absolutely in a position to know what’s happening with this film, and he tells me that it is “absolutely false” that Brandon Routh is out as Superman for the stand-alone series.

The only thing that has been determined is that JUSTICE LEAGUE will not feature the actors from the other films. That’s it.

Right now, Routh is still Warner’s choice to return if they make another stand-alone SUPERMAN film, and that’s based on conversations as recently as a few weeks ago.”

This definitely makes the situation a bit more interesting, as we now have warring rumors. So who do we believe? Well, at this point we can’t say who is right or wrong until we get confirmation from the studio. And since we can’t count on that at this point, we are just going to stay out of it.

But we do want to know what you think:

Talking Point: Rumor or not, do you think Brandon Routh should return for another Superman flick?

That part about getting rid of Synger is blasphimy.
Sure SR was lacking in the plot department but Synger knows how to shoot a movie, even though it mostly mimiced most of what Donner had already done, but still it was an OK movie despite alot of cgi shots he could’ve used Routhe for, but hey.

I say keep Synger and Routhe because the next supe movie WILL have alot more action in it and we’ll get to see Superman use his abilities abit more instead of spying on Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) in her house.
Get rid of Bosworth and recast Lois Lane, someone who has abit more attitude and can make the part believable.
Back to Synger…he can direct action scenes good, I’m sure with Superman Returns:Again, we’ll see waaaaay more action and Routhe will have to dig deeper as an actor to make his Superman alil bit more edgey.

Superman Returns:Again is not the title but what would you call it?

Like THE DARK KNIGHT call it THE MAN OF STEEL.

Steve Stevenson says:

Superman was stabbed with Kryptonite and survived, STABBED! Superman returns was as boring as X-Men, and X2 did little to improve that series. It’s blasphemy to say Ratner made X3 good, but I said it, so there. Brian Singer has no style, NO style, unlike Donner. Even McG gave Charlie’s Angels some energy to get me to watch it, twice! Brandon Routh’s 90210 sensibilty did little to impress this eagle eyed critic. Steve Stevenson reporting…

In that sentence you described a few of the reasons why Singer should go. How can you say he should stay when you acknowledge that the plot was abysmal (Singer OKed the plot and hand picked the writers) and most of his directing was derivative.

Singer sucks.

cambomb says:

Another reason Singer should go is he allowed his politics to play a role in the film.
He was arrogant enough to alter, ” Truth, Justice and the American way.” to ” Truth Justice and all that other stuff.” That might not seem that significant to some, but it sure as hell lit me and my pals on fire.
SINGER, let me remind you, it is a privlege to captain this franchise, not a soapbox for your pathetic anti-American Hollywood non-sense, as subtle as it was, we are on to you.
The new P.C. Superman must make his rounds in Europe and other parts of the world, so why? We don’t offend and seem too introspective?
LEAVE SUPERMAN ALONE, REVISIONIISTS!
