Exclusive: ‘Whip It’ Screenwriter Confirms Details

Screenwriter Shauna Cross has filled in some pieces of the Whip It puzzle.

Whip It, of course, is Drew Barrymore’s forthcoming directorial debut, due out in 2008. It’s a coming-of-age tale about a girl who finds her identity through the power of roller derby.

In an e-mail to your humble Reject, Cross confirmed the action is set in Austin, Texas, and is an adaptation of the Cross’ recently published book, Derby Girl.

If other e-mails I’ve received are any indication, it looks like Whip It is generating some buzz among roller derby athletes.

Call me a fool, but I think this one has “instant classic” written all over it.
