The first trailer for Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood — which stars Russell Crowe as the bow-wielding outlaw of Sherwood Forest — has hit the web via YouTube this evening, and man does it rock. Literally.

Pumped over a heavy soundtrack are shots of Crowe looking very Gladiator-esque in merry ole England, alongside the likes of Cate Blanchett as Maid Marion, Mark Strong as Sir Godfrey and Matthew Macfayden as the Sheriff of Nottingham. This clip reel style teaser certainly has some intensity, even though it isn’t showing us much. However, I do like the darker tone that is being hinted at with this first look. Who knows, we just might get that seriously badass Robin Hood movie we’ve always wanted.

Universal will released Robin Hood on May 14, 2010.

I really want to like this. Ridley Scott is AWESOME as is Crowe but the trailer isn't doing much for me…

I thought it was just meh. Did they take the stuff left over from Kingdom of Heaven and recycle the costumes? I'm not sure I can take another 'serious historical drama/action' flick anymore.

Foot soldiers used leather shields in those days. Only nobility could afford metal worked shields. So the shields' "bendability" is perfectly authentic.

First of all, with the amount of times this material has been done (numerous movies, series both old and new) why even bother?

Yeh i know its a little different and concentrates more on the Crusades rather than Sherwood but still its not exactly original (but hey what is these days?)

Second of all, why have they got an Australian actor to play a british folk hero, they made the same mistake last time with Kevin Costner :(

Hopefully the movie turns out well, im guessing they will be putting out all the stops to try and pull in that Gladiator fan lore.

Errol Flynn wasn't British and he was the best Robin Hood. Crowe is a much better actor than Costner so I don't think his being Australian will be an issue.

I thought it looked terrific. And, speaking as another costume drama lover, the costumes are just fine and perfectly authentic ; the 12th century wasn't exactly known for lavish ballgowns.

True, but I've seen better. I just didn't dig them. Watching the hd teaser trailer, they just looked really cheap. They don't have to be lavish, cloths were not at that time, that's not what I meant. I mean it looks like they could rip and tear any moment. I just think they look cheap.
