Robert Rodriguez to Bust Out His ‘Machete’ in Five Weeks

For the longest time — well, ever since the theatrical release of Grindhouse to be more exact — fans have been clamoring for more Machette, the Danny Trejo led fake trailer directed by Robert Rodriguez that was part of the trailer montage that split up Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof. And now according to Trejo, a feature length Machete film is on the way — and the madness will begin shooting in five weeks.
Trejo spilled this info along with noting that he will not appear in Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables, this weekend to the fine gents at Gordon & the Whale at CineVegas in Las Vegas. The story of Machete will follow the title character, a vengeful Mexican ex-Federale who takes on corporate corruption in the best way possible — violently.
This news seems to fit in with everything else that we’ve been hearing about this production. In April, Variety reported that Rodriguez had the production of Machete “ready to go” despite his desire to move forward with Nerverackers first. Rodriguez also told MTV last week that he’s looking to shoot his live-action Jetsons film next year, possibly having it ready to roll into theaters in late 2010. This would be pushing things into a rather tight timetable, especially if he’s looking to do all three films. My guess is that Machete will indeed go first (it’s the cheapest and likely the quickest of the three) and Jetsons will come next. Bth Rodriguez and Warner Bros. seems intent on getting that one done sometime in 2010. As you may be thinking already, this leaves Sin City 2 as the odd film out, as Rodriguez isn’t even talking about it anymore. Who knows when that will resurface. What we do know is that Rodriguez is becoming the next Guillermo Del Toro of film development — 27 projects at a time is just how he rolls. The good news is that from the sound of it, Machette is mobilizing soon. So at least that’s something.

Are you still as excited for Machete as you might have been when Grindhouse came out?
