fp_rodriguez.jpgNot too long ago we reported that Robert Rodriguez was in the midst of making decisions about what he would make next. The two options on the table were a live action adaptation of “The Jetsons” or a movie version of “Land of the Lost”. Both projects seemed very interesting, but there were no definite answers to be found.

Today we come to find out thanks to Variety (via /Film), that Rodriguez has signed on to remake the 1968 film “Barbarella”, which had originally starred Jane Fonda. Rodriguez said of the character, “”I love this iconic character and all that she represents, and I’m truly excited by the challenge of inviting a new audience into her universe.”

Also involved in the project are writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who co-wrote “Casino Royale” and very recently finished the script for the next Bond film, “Bond 22″. “Barabarella” is set for a 2008 release.

I think Robert Rodriguez blew it... he had the chance and passed on directing the most anticipated movie of the century, "The Jetsons". Most of us who grew up longing for the day when floating cities would welcome us home, will have to wait for our Jetpacks to be neatly stowed by our AI Femme-Bots. Jane and George and all the good folk at Spacely Sprockets were the treat of many after-school TV fantasy time. Alas, hopefully another skilled director will helm the production and bring us the future that was never meant to be - at least not yet... Don't get me wrong "Barbarella" is a hot ticket too, but she's no Jane Jetson...
