Just when you thought everything was super awesome fantastic and life was treating you better for the first time, we’ve got even more sweet remake news coming down the pipeline. Fresh off of writing my list of 20 films from the 80s that aren’t actually getting remade, we read this quick interview from producer Frank Marshall over at io9 that has him doubtful about the Jurassic Park 4 sequel and holding steady on the NeverEnding Story reboot.

Feel free to call it out for not being a true remake, since it’ll be heading back to the book for source material, but if it looks like a remake and sounds like a remake, the shoe probably fits. Or something. I was never good with aphorisms.

The money quote:

We love the book. We’ve always thought there was an opportunity there because there are a lot of elements in the book that aren’t in the movie. It’s another one where we’re still working on the rights. It’s a huge thing to get it. And once we get that, we’ll bring on a writer. But that’s kind of off in the distance, but it’s a great story.

So it’s not going to hit theaters tomorrow or anything, but after they get the rights, it sounds like they are on the golden path to getting it all done. Neil waxed pretty negatively about the remake when we first reported it, and I remain skeptical, but I’m more interested in what die-hard Story fans have to say. I love the first film, barely stayed awake for the second, but I can’t say that I’m completely in love with it or anything. Is a reboot such a bad idea? Or is it childhood rape?

In other news – no Jurassic Park 4? What is the world coming to? And what’s with all the questions?

Seriously.

  • They must have seen my comment on the previous post... this is terrible news.

What a coincident! I am currently watching this on Netflix streaming.

I was just thinking of directors names to remake this:

    Steven Spielbergo
    Guillermo Del Toro (?)
    Terry Giliam
Wolfgang Peterson (why not do it again?)
    Peter Jackson
    Sam Raimi
    Alex Proyas
    Spike Jonze

and more, but I can't think of any at the moment

I think I just threw up a little bit in my mouth.

I'm a die hard Neverending Story Fan. I own the book. I have read the book probably 40 times and if they dare do a bad job remaking this movie I will hunt the director down and murder him.

Notice I didn't say that I was against a remake, because in principle I'm not.. I think the original film was beautiful, stunning, inspirational, heartwarming, everything that a great children's fantasy movie should be. It's also a beautiful adaptation of the first.. what.. five chapters of the book? (I'll reread it again and get back to you). Unfortunately there is SO much more to the story that has never been told... they hinted at those elements in the second film but it was NOTHING compared to the first.. and the third film.... Basically the third film did about as bad a job of adaptation as The Seeker did with The Dark is Rising... WORSE even.

    To be cont....

My greatest desire is that Guillermo del Toro does a 2-3 part epic adaptation a la Lord of the Rings. His work with Pan's labyrinth proves he has the cahones to show the darkness in a children's story and the vision to bring the myriad characters to life.

In fact, I'm tempted to start a petition. If he can't do it, I'd also like to nominate Tarsem Singh to the above list. And put stars next to Gilliam and Jackson... We'll see how Spike Jonze does with Where the Wild Things Are before I have the confidence to stand behind him for this particular remake.

I'm going to stop talking now.. I really haven't spoken out this much on a film since the travesty of The Seeker... *shudder*
  • Along with Warner's 2012 remake of the film, I am looking for a producer for The Neverending Story on stage at Javits Convention Center in New York City. Both an opera and ballet score have been composed by Siegfried Matthus. Please visit my website for more details by following the link below.
