Reject Update: Enchanted Gives Thanks for a $50 Mil. Week
Posted by John Cairns (jcairns@filmschoolrejects.com) on November 26, 2007

Well, as expected Enchanted was your box office champ this weekend with a $35 million performance for the Friday-Sunday period and a $50 million performance for the entire 5-day Thanksgiving period. The big surprise for me was that This Christmas finished in second place this weekend with an $18 mil performance. That one I didn’t see coming. The rest of the movies finished pretty much as expected.
The totals from Box Office Mojo:
| Release | Estimated Gross |
| Enchanted | $35,332,000 |
| This Christmas | $18,600,000 |
| Beowulf | $16,240,000 |
| Hitman | $13,035,000 |
| Bee Movie | $12,010,000 |
| Fred Claus | $10,735,000 |
| August Rush | $9,430,000 |
| American Gangster | $9,207,000 |
| The Mist | $9,062,000 |
| No Country for Old Men | $8,112,000 |
Now here are the five-day totals for the top three new releases:
| Release | Estimated Gross |
| Enchanted | $50,048,000 |
| This Christmas | $27,100,000 |
| Hitman | $21,000,000 |
I guess the comment I have is that I thought Enchanted would do better. It’s getting excellent reviews, by the way. I read it was up in the 90s at Rotten Tomatoes. So it should have done roaring business. A lot of people thought it would approach $70 mil, but $50 mil seems rather short of expectations.
The other thing I noticed is that $13 million dollars found its way into Hitman’s coffers this weekend and that has to be a surprise because Rotten Tomatoes had that movie at 11%. They were really lucky to do that well.
Also, I notice that it took $8,112,000 to make it into the Top Ten this weekend. That was the take for No Country for Old Men, which was tenth this week. In past weeks, a movie with a take in the $8 million range might make it up to fourth place! All you needed was a $2 mil or $3 mil take to crack the Top Ten. But an $8 million weekend wasn’t even good enough for Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, which dropped right out of the Top Ten and into eleventh place if Box Office Mojo’s projections are correct.
All in all I would say that it’s been a very good Thanksgiving Day weekend for the theaters with a lot of money being spread out among a lot of movies. And of course Oscar Season is on with these movies being rolled out. Things are looking up.
Thanks for checking out the Reject Report box office update! See you later this week for another Reject Report preview of the latest movies.
