Quaid, Tatum Are The Newest GI Joe Recruits

GI Joe is shaping up to have one hell of a cast, if nothing else. Variety is reporting that familiar face and strong actor Dennis Quaid has signed on to play General Hawk, the leader of the task force. Hawk has traditionally had a less combat orientated role, but early in his career he was known to mix it up with Cobra. It’ll be interesting to see which storylines they draw from for Hawk’s character – fans will know what I’m talkin’ bout.
Also joining up for the tour of duty is Channing Tatum as GI Joe combat leader and point man, Duke Hauser. It’s reported that Duke is being billed as the top dog in this film adaptation, which makes sense as he always had a prominent role in the cartoon and comics. Duke narrowly escaped death in GI Joe: The Movie, falling into a coma after being poisoned by Serpentor.
I’m definitely down with Quaid. He’s a top notch guy who can bring the right stuff to the role. Tatum I’m less convinced of as playing the All-American Soldier of Soldiers. I would have liked to see Duke go to an older actor, but what do I know. Along with a Wayans brother as his best friend Ripcord, this casting has me toning down my excitement.
GI Joe hits theaters in 2009.
