‘Pirates’ pillages more dough from America

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's ChestWhen will this film stop making money?

Allow me to illustrate the disgusting wrath of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest this year:

It spent 7 weeks in the Box Office Top 10, its first 3 weeks at #1.

It grossed $135 million in its first weekend, just after the 4th of July.

It grossed a total of $423 million in the United States and $641 million at the Foreign Box Office – for a grand total of $1.06 billion (yes, that is BILLION!) Worldwide.

And then, as ComingSoon.net reported today, Pirates rocked the house again on DVD, bringing in $5 million in sales in just 1 day. 1 Day! I admit this film was good, in fact I gave it a great rating in my review, but is it this good?

As much as I want to say no to that question, I cannot. Pirates was probably the most holistically entertaining film of the year. It broke through to all different kinds of demographics, bringing out both families and movie buffs alike. There is no doubt that it will become the #1 DVD of the year on top of being the year’s #1 theatrical release. And it may just have a bit to do with timing – I mean, isn’t there some nondenominational holiday coming up?
