Overture Acquires ‘Sunshine Cleaning’

First of all, I am aware that this news is a day or two old, but that is of no consequence to me. I’m told that many of our readers don’t follow some of the “trade rags” like Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. They find them stuffy, preachy and overwhelmingly uninteresting. And while I agree, it is still my job to sift through said rags and find some good news about great films.
As well, I think that Anne Thompson over at Variety is cut from a different mold than all those other chach-bags. On some level, she and I seem to agree a lot. One particular film that had us both nodding our heads with approval was Christine Jeff’s Sunshine Cleaning, which stars Amy Adams and Emily Blunt as two down-on-their-luck sisters who go into business cleaning up the mess left behind when someone kicks the bucket. It was a very sweet and endearing film, akin to Little Miss Sunshine (Alan Arkin even plays the cranky grandfather). Thompson is reporting that Sunshine Cleaning was picked up this week by Overture Films, which previously bought Henry Poole is Here. The deal is said to have fallen short of the $7 million asking price for the film, but this far removed from Sundance, they should be glad it sold either way.
We will keep you posted on more details of the film’s release as they become available. For now though, feel free to take a look at my review.
