Oscar Noms Stay Predictable, Snub The Dark Knight, Gran Torino

The Best of the Best?

I really didn’t want to have the angle of this news be about The Dark Knight, but it really is the perfect backdrop for the larger story. I don’t share the same ire that many fanboys have about the Academy’s decision to pass over the summer blockbuster for Best Picture and Best Director, but it being passed over finally gives us an answer as to what direction the Awards would go.

They had two choices – either begin pretending to be relevant or continue the slow decline into meaninglessness that other awards shows have begun. Looking at this list of nominations is like looking at the “Oscar Bait” list that the studios created last year for their production slate. It’s all so predictable. Boring. Have we really gotten that pitch-perfect at guessing what the Academy will want? Are we really this close to a sort of Cinematic Singularity where we can create a Best Picture winner from scratch? Is there nothing organic about the process anymore?

Apparently not. But I’ll let you decide:

I see no reason to complain about The Dark Knight not making the top spots – in fact, I predicted that it wouldn’t – but that’s the problem. I was holding out a little hope that the giant voting body would surprise me, pump some life back into a stale program. Hell, most of the movies on this list haven’t even been seen by audiences yet – not real audiences outside of Los Angeles County anyway.

The only people surprised at all this morning are the cast and crew of Gran Torino that didn’t see any nominations come their way. And maybe a very disappointed Team TDK. I’m just not sure how the Oscars are going to continue down the path they’ve chosen and manage to avoid reverting back to an intimate dinner that might get picked up by a local access channel.

  • I'm happy that Ben Button is nominated but bummed that Dark Knight is not in Best Picture nomination (oh well). I'm also happy Robert Downey is nominated for Tropic Thunder. Good job Rob!! Oh and good luck to Mickey Rouke.
  • Yeah...won't be watching this year. I'll watch The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray that night instead. I can see, maybe, possibly, in a small universe, not getting a nod for Best Picture, but no nomination for Best Directing? That's fucking criminal.

    Still can't believe "The Reader" was nominated for BP over "The Dark Knight". F*cking Holocaust stories.
  • 'Man on Wire' will win "Best documentary feature"... but other then that, I don't care.
  • Very Wrestler lite. Not even a best song nomination. I thought it was really good. What really annoys me is that the Best Picture nominations are almost exactly the same as the Best Adapted Screenplay nominations. Thats gay (which I suppose is also quite funny as Milk is the only original one).

    The fact that both the common man and a holier than thou organization like the Academy could have agreed on what is a cinematic masterpiece but didn't, proves once again, why the Oscars are irrelevant. Hollywood can have their little party that night and give a bunch of awards to some obscure movie, or a tired rehash (Ben Button) while I watch what is the true best picture of the year, The Dark Knight

    Anyway, i wont be watching. I plan on eating some homemade guacamole instead.

    Very disappointing & depressing that The Dark Knight did not get nominated for Best Picture, Director & Musical Score. At least it got those 8 other nominations. Will definitely NOT be watching the Oscars this year in PROTEST!! :-(

    No matter what the Academy says, the real BEST PIC of 2008 is THE DARK KNIGHT.

    its their egos they are trying to protect. if they nominate TDK for best picture they might stoop down in intellect or whatever bullshit just cuz the "masses" like the same thing. They really do like more boring period type movies. sorry benjamin button i liked you but i couldnt stand to watch you maybe more than twice. *yawn, another ho hum year. wont be watching as always.
  • You're right. Titanic, Return of the King and Forrest Gump weren't appreciated by the masses. The Departed and No Country for Old Men WERE boring period pics--how did I miss that?
