As a huge David Sedaris fan, I both lament the fact that his work is never in the news to be adapted into film and understand why. He’s a short story writer, and that world is difficult to translate into movies (even if most of his stories have connective themes and people, and even if short film compilations are gaining popularity (Sedaris, Je t’Aime, anyone?)).

The fine folks over at Gordon and the Whale are reporting that, not only are they a movie site and not an indie band, the short story “C.O.G.” from David Sedaris’s “Naked” is going to find itself up on the big screen courtesy of Kyle Patrick Alvarez.

The story involves Sedaris shaping stones into the shape of the state of Oregon for use as kitsch clocks, his Child of God co-worker, and their exploits trying to sell the Oregons at fairs.

Alvarez, as you may remember, won the Someone to Watch Indie Spirit Award last year for his first film, Easier With Practice – which appropriately enough features a short story author.

Gordon and the Whale was intrepid enough to follow up with the writer/director, and he confirmed that the script is finished and that he’s hunting to financing currently.

Let’s just hope he’s not asking Paramount this week.
