Officially Cool: A ‘Spaceballs’ Animated TV Show!
Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on September 6, 2007

The movie Spaceballs, Mel Brooks’ great parody of the Star Wars phenomenon, has long been considered one of the single greatest parodies of all time, at least by me. So you can imagine my excitement when I swerved over to Film Junk today and found a story about an upcoming Spaceballs Animated Series on G4. Long have I wished that there would be something good on G4. Just kidding, I’m a big fan of Morgan Webb from way back.
As Sean from Film Junk points out, Mel Brooks is executive producing the show, which will no doubt capitalize on the truck-loads of Star Wars events, films and fandemonium that have occurred since the original Spaceballs was made in 1987. We have seen three more films (all with plenty in them to parody), about 20 Comic Cons and a few Star Wars celebrations. This is something that is just ripe for the pickin’, and it is great to see that Mel Brooks is still the mastermind behind it all. From the promo, we can see that Lord Helmet, Lone Starr, Barf and Yogurt will be involved. Although, is it just me or does Lord Helmet look more like the Darth Vader version of Stewey from “Family Guy” than Rick Moranis? Just a thought. Cue the promo clip…
According to Zap2it, production on “Spaceballs: The Animated Series” began in early 2005 with Mel Brooks and Spaceballs co-writer Thomas Meehan writing the pilot and overseeing the writing on all 13 episodes. They will air on G4 in the fall. We will, of course, stay on top of this and bring you more news when dates are announced. You can also visit G4’s Official Site.
Until then, may the Schwarz be with you…
What do you think of this feature? Do you have something “cool” that you’d like to share with the rest of the class? Let me know at neil@filmschoolrejects.com.
