Nic Cage’s Bankok Dangerous is Not Safe, Obviously

Nicolas Cage in Bankok Dangerous

Gather round, all you Nic Cage fans — have we got a treat for you. Not only to we have a cool first look at the poster for Cage’s upcoming rogue assassin flick Bankok Dangerous, we also have the above production still to show you, which as you can see… shows Nicolas Cage rocking a cowboy hat on a riverboat in Southeast Asia, looking inconspicuous as always. And wait, is that Marc Anthony behind him? Probably not.

Bankok Dangerous, which is a remake by Oxide and Danny Pang of their 1999 film with the same name, tells the story of a hitman in Bankok who loses his edge, falling for a local woman and befriending an errand boy. Of course, this lack of focus on killing people puts him in even more dangers and he must use his assassin skills and his kick-ass mullet to defeat all of Thailand’s goon’s, as any fun-loving American would.

The film itself looks like it could have some slick action in it, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for Oscar nominations. As well, I have a hard time believing that it can possibly live up to the Michael Bay-size awesome factor of the poster below (click to enlarge).

Bankok Dangerous bursts into theaters on August 22nd.

The city Bankok is called Krung Thep Maha Nakhon or Krung Thep by the
people of Thailand. The city capitol of Thailand is actually called:
"Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Yuthaya Mahadilok
Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon
Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit"

The country was called Siam then changed to Thailand, then back to Siam
and now it's back to Thailand. The country was capitol was once named
    Ayutthaya, Siam.

The movie should of been called:
    "Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon
Rattanakosin Mahinthara Yuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani
Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit
    Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit" Dangerous

Uh, well I don't think Nick Cage sucks (like Brian above) but unfortunately, in many ways, I think this movie does.

I didn't see the original (1999) version, but the story seems better than than the one they made with Cage. IE, in that one, the hitman is deaf mute, not the hit man's "girlfriend" as in the remake. The former would make for way more interesting storytelling, since it presents more challenges for someone in his shoes to overcome in order to do his job and survive, much less not getting caught.

His love interest in the remake is nice looking, but the romance scenes with her and Cage are a waste, they just don't work, and they weren't shot very well (like when the go to some Buddhist cave with priests and candles everywhere, you can't see anything, it looks like a black and white movie. And yes, it's supposed to be "film noir" but it just annoys you to have to squint so much just to make out whats happening in the scene, which is interesting but too drab and dark.

And who buys into a guy who murders for hire acting like Mr. cute little innocent loverboy who falls in "love" at first sight and goes all ga-ga, it's just corny.

The end sucks too. I won't go into it, but frankly, its a lot of build up for nothing (or a let down one could argue) In my humble opinion. Sorry Nick, I have a lot of respect for your work, and I think this movie had a LOT of potential. That sidekick Kung was talented too, could have played that up even more.

The writing needed some tweaking, and so did the direction for the action/chase scenes. Where's John Woo when you need him, and you know the guy personally no? (Face Off...? Anyone?) IE, some of those chases had so much potential but didn't deliver (kind of like the movie overall... sorry.) Don't get me wrong, a lot of your action stuff worked great, and yes, you did kick a lot of ass ("filmicly" speaking also) in much of the movie. But the romance part seemed hack-ish, and that ending...!

You know what they say - good ending, good movie - and vice versa.
