New ‘Valkyrie’ Trailer Has More Action… Still No Accents

Tom Cruise in Valkyrie

Valkyrie has had it pretty rough the past several months. From production issues, legal troubles, and release date changes to the blind bashing against anything with Tom Cruise’s name attached to it… the advance buzz has been basically non-existent. United Artists hopes to change that with the release of a new, action-packed and more stylized trailer. Check it out below.

More action, quick cut editing, split screens, a ticking clock, mosquito torture, and Cruise walking through his own screen credit! This trailer is a vast improvement over the previous teaser, but will it be enough to win back an audience? Haters will continue to trash Cruise for being Cruise, and director Bryan Singer has his own share of critics after the Superman Returns debacle, but those knee-jerk reactions aside the movie’s looking like it may not be as bad as people seem to expect. I get the sense that much of the “action” in the trailer is heightened (if not actually created) via the editing, but it still looks like a solid film. And then there’s the issue of the accents, or lack thereof…

People will complain (again) that Cruise and the others should be sporting German accents for historical authenticity. The logic of this argument eludes me as Germans speak German, not German-accented English. You could argue that the movie should have been filmed in German, but this is an American studio film hoping to compete for domestic box office dollars so that was never really an option.

Valkyrie is based on the true story of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, an officer in Nazi Germany who collaborates with the resistance to assassinate Hitler. We’ll have to wait until the film opens on December 26th to find out if he succeeds.

What do you think of the new trailer? Do you care about the lack of German accents? Do you think von Stauffenberg succeeds?

I must admit, I'm probably going to rush this film when it's released. Cruise can sport that eye-patch, lemme tell ya.

The logic behind the lack of German-accented English is painstakingly obvious and I'm glad someone brought it up. You want to be historically accurate, pull a Mel Gibson and English-sub the entire production. I'm just going to imagine that the characters ARE speaking German, but I can understand the language - at least to the extent of the words they are speaking and in their specific context. It really shouldn't distract from the movie itself.

I will go to see it myself. While I am not a big fan of Tom Cruise I am a major history buff and this is a part of WWII that has not been covered to this extent. Hoepfully they will get the facts straight and not butcher the characters personalities too badly.

This film looks like it could be entertaining. I don't really understand all the bashing its getting....but as for the accents, I agree with the "they would be speaking German" argument. Now, disagree all you will, but I am a fan of Marie Antoinette and I think the strongest aspect is the lack of accents. It actually brought the characters closer to the viewer. When there's an accent it creates distance, but by making them talk like us I was able to put myself in their shoes. I thought that was the whole genius of what Sofia Coppola did. Whether or not Valkyrie will do this...I don't know...but if done right I think it can be very effective at creating a bond with the characters instead of creating distance.

Just think of Hunt For Red October... same thing.
  • People who complain about the accents or non-German are just looking for something to complain about because they hate something else about the movie, like Tom Cruise or Bryan Singer. I love Tom Cruise, don't care for Singer, but think the movie is looking pretty tight so far.

I can't believe ppl are going into this rooting for nazis ?
(Many saw Evil , they Dared to stop it.)
    Oooooh. Aaaaaahhhhhh,,, how fucking heroic.
All these pussys carry Lugers,,, hey Valkyrie, wak right into Hitlers office, and blow his fucking brains out, and then do yourself. (That's a Nazi Hero!!!)

Nothings really historically acurate here, its BASED on a true story.
Cruise looks like he's auditioning for the role of Snake Plisken.

the movie and the story is good ....but I am very disapointed that tom cruze dose not have a German accent. It not sure who to blame for that ethier tom himself or Byan Singer . also Not all the soldiers where evil S.O.B 'S many where foced to fight . Im not trying to defend them , yes there where a lot of monsters in the german army. Mainly the guy's at the top, and the S.S , and expeally in the contiontraiton camp where true montsters .
