New Hancock Trailer Could Turn Some Heads
Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on May 2, 2008
I get the feeling that we’ve been unnecessarily hard on the upcoming Will Smith superhero flick Hancock, which hits theaters on July 4th weekend. When you really step back and take a good look at it, the formula is there. You have Will Smith, the king of summer blockbusters returning to July 4th weekend where he has never failed. He is flanked by director Peter Berg, who has made some good flicks in the past, including Friday Night Lights and The Kingdom. Add to that the comedic presence of Jason Bateman as the PR guy to Smith’s carefree, publicity nightmare of a superhero, and the hotness of Charlize Theron and we’ve got ourselves an interesting equation — an equation that seems to be leaning toward a solid movie. We will have to wait until July 2nd to see if I am right, but when it comes to big summer action, following Will Smith usually isn’t wrong.

first time seeing this trailer, and damn I can’t wait to see this. I think everyone was a little harsh on Will Smith in I Am Legend which leads me to the conclusion that we shouldn’t underestimate Will Smith, and Jason Bateman, and Charlize Theron plus the fact that this movie is about an alcoholic Superhero (besides Tony Stark/ Iron Man), it is gonna be great.

Speaking as one of the would-be Hancock haters, I submit the following summer movie formula to you:
1. Will Smith in the lead
2. A hot director who has yet to make a bomb
3. Comedic presence
4. Hot lady
Sure, it works, but it also worked with Wild, Wild West… see below…
1. Will Smith in the lead: Capt. James West
2. A hot director who has yet to make a bomb - Barry Sonnefeld, coming off MIB
3. Comedic presence - Kevin Kline
4. Hot lady - Salma Hayek and a cadre of supermodels
Beware the Hancock!

Great trailer, excellent concept. But why do I feel like I just saw the entire movie? Can’t trailers leave a little bit out so we get surprised on opening day?

Well, When i first saw the teaser, my hopes grew enormously. And i could feel my finger tips tingle with joy (and anticipation). But after seeing this - well, its just the same crap every year. A summer blockbuster definatly, but not a film in which my fingers will tingle.
Shizzle.

All you Will haters pipe down. I wish the movie could be R to give it that edge for us adults. Jason Bateman is the most underated actor out there. I hope the two can be paired in another comedy showcasing both of their talents. The first trailer I was not interested in seeing the movie. But hearing the studio is hiding a major part of the plot from the audience has my ears on major alert. It’s kinda hard to take a funny super antihero whose a boozer. Drop him in the middle of Summer blow up season. Iron Man is a Bad Ass ask no questions and a boozer. It’s hard to market Will Smith as a boozer in a comedy/antihero/action flick. Typecasting.
