This film looks more like Frank Miller's attempt to re-create the nouveau-noir mood of Sin City than Will Eisner's attempt to re-create Citizen Kane's atmosphere. <br>Miller pontificated early on in the production of The Spirit about remaining true to the integrity of Eisner's character and integrity. He even said he was storyboarding by cutting out panels from old Spirit stories. This doesn't look like or sound like Eisner's Spirit. <br>"I'm going to kill you all kinds of dead." I don't recall this kind of dialogue from any of the Spirit sections I ever read, and I believe I've read pretty much all of them. It looks like Miller's big ego trumps Eisner's vision for the character in this movie. <br>I was extremely excited when I heard about this production and Miller's involvement in it. <br>Based on what I've seen so far I'm preparing to be extremely disappointed.

Sorry Philip M., but given the chance, audiences can appreciate more than they're given. Take a look at The Dark Knight. Pretty heady stuff there, and the numbers speak for itself there. If all you've ever had are cheeseburgers, how do you know you won't like a filet mignon? My problem with Miller here is that his style of storytelling is GREAT for pulpy comics, but writers like Eisner and Alan Moore are just...better. Bigger writers. Sin City played out to me like a movie trying to ape the style of a comic book, which, in essence, was aping the style of Chandler, so its' identity, it's style gets lost. Imagine Iron Man done by Frank Miller...don't lie and say you'd love it...you KNOW how goofy that would be. From what I can see, The Watchmen looks pretty much exactly like the comic book...and that is about as heady as a comic book gets. A great artist can work in many styles. The death of an artist is to fall into a rut and produce hollow work. If this bombs, it may inspire Mr. Miller to show what he can really do, in so far as telling a story.

Chandler was great, the original. But his books read like like real life. Miller reminds me sometimes of James Ellroy. I heard him speak once at a noir film fest, spouting off "lingo" like, you know, the "real deal". Lotta telling, not enough showing.

Don't get me wrong, this movie might be cool. But it's NOT the Spirit. At all. That's a totally different movie, for some other, alternate reality. In this one, it's, yes, I'll say it again...Sin City 2: The Spirit

God, it just looks awful. Even forgetting for the moment that it looks like an aberration of Eisner's work, it just looks like a bad, bad movie. Like an Ah-Ha video with an overblown budget.

God, it just looks awful. Even forgetting for the moment that it looks like an aberration of Eisner's work, it just looks like a bad, bad movie. Like an Ah-Ha video with an overblown budget.

I think Miller is getting sucked back in to hollywood like he did the early 90s. He's taking Eisner's work and making it more sellable to the public. But he is doing what the Wachowski brothers did to V for Vendetta. Turn it into something its not. But Miller and Eisner were friends, so at one point Eisner could have said to do whatever Miller wanted with his stuff. Unfortunately, if V for Vendetta and The spirit were made the way they were written, it would have been a big openning night, then it would have bombed. These stories are too smart for a lot of people, and Miller is doing exactly what any other hollywood person would do. Gut it, put in women and big action (not that with The spirit you need to add more women). I will see this movie but I'm a little disappointed in Miller. Hopefully, he'll realize what he's doing and go back to what he does best.
