Never Too Early For Iron Man 2 Rumors

Iron Man

Marvel’s had a huge week between the massive and excellent Iron Man opening and the announcement of their movie slate through 2011… so now it’s time to start talking Iron Man 2 rumors! Cinema Blend got a message last night from a very reliable source with some interesting notes on the return of Tony Stark.

No surprise at all if you stayed through Iron Man’s end credits is the rumor that Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury will be a major player in the sequel. Reportedly Fury will be enlisting Mr. Stark in a fight against The Mandarin. I haven’t been a comic reader in years, so I can only assume The Mandarin is some kind of half-man, half-canary creature. Probably from China too. And he may have been responsible for pecking out Nick Fury’s eye. Apparently the current film’s opening terrorist group was a nod to The Mandarin as they were called “The Ten Rings”, and the comic storyline features The Mandarin searching for the ten rings of power…

The source also mentions what should be a no-brainer for Marvel… characters will cross over from film to film. This summer’s other Marvel release, The Incredible Hulk, reportedly features a cameo by Robert Downey Jr. as Stark, and they plan to continue this trend into the future. This is smart because it’s advertising to a captive audience and it’s extremely cool. The trick will be to keep the lid on it so it’s a true surprise for movie-goers. Iron Man director Jon Favreau smartly tried to keep it secret, and did a pretty good job of it too. Thor is mentioned as a possibility for cameoing in the sequel, which makes sense as the Thor movie will be out (and bombing) the same summer Iron Man 2 is released, but other names dropped include Black Widow and Hawkeye.

One rumor the rumor-monger mentions does make me pause. Again, I’m not familiar with the comics, but when I hear The Mandarin will “have a monster at his disposal by the name of Fin Fang Foom” I have to groan. A dragon? Really? And he’s extraterrestrial at that? Right… This is when I start hoping the anonymous scooper is full of it. (The tipster also drops news on another upcoming Marvel movie, Captain America… and that they’re looking at Matthew McConaughey to possibly star. I’ll probably be in the minority here, but this news still isn’t as groan-inducing as that Fin Fang Foom giant gecko business…)

    Good stuff Rob...

I'm sure of this, Robert Downey Jr. Isn't going to allow the scripts to suck.
So whatever you hear remember that.

And the Thor cameo will be shot and then 50/50 chance be cut from the film.
    ;-)
  • I wonder if they can come up with a technological explanation for Mandarin's Ten Rings. It would be a bit more believable than the alien-origin story they have, and he's not much of a villain without them.

The cross-overs are going to be excellent, especially if that means Downey as Iron Man in Avengers. I guess they could make SHIELD stuff, too, now.

But David Hasselhoff is the only Nick Fury for me.

If you remember (or better stated, if I remember), the Afghani terrorists who took Stark hostage in the film were members of "The Ten Rings". So maybe they'll have something to do with Mandarin?

As long as War Machine makes an appearance, I'll be a happy camper... big ol' Fin Fang Foom dragon or no.

Crap... I should learn to read the article more carefully. It was already mentioned.
  • anybody
the dragon would have to be extraterrestrial, because the ten rings give mandorin COSMIC powers, and why did you say "A dragon? Really? And he’s extraterrestrial at that? Right…" it is set in a comic book world, or are you truely not smart enough to figure out that superheros are not real.
  • As a long time Marvel reader, I cant imagine the Maderine and Fing Fang Foom being in the sequel, at least not without a MAJOR overhaul. These characters, originally, were the type of racist stereotypes that would not fly well in todays PC world. - just my two pennies

.....uh, sorry dude, but fin fang foom kinda rocks. A lot. Look him up. I'm sure there is a
    good wiki article.
