Must See Trailer: Rainn Wilson in The Rocker

Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on May 7, 2008

Lets get this out of the way — I absolutely love anything that Rainn Wilson does. I have been a longtime fan of “The Office” (who isn’t?) and he hasn’t yet done any movies that have soiled the TV-to-movie crossover. His small role in Juno was awesome… Lets face it — the man is comedic genius in a can. So when I heard that he was going to play a washed up 80s hair metal rocker, I was more than excited. And now, after seeing this trailer first this morning at a screening of What Happens in Vegas and then catching it again online, I am even more excited.

The film looks solid, delivering laughs via a solid cast, but my hope is that Wilson handles the spotlight well. Thus far he has been limited to smaller roles, so this should make for an interesting experiment. Either way, you can imagine that I am excited. For more on The Rocker, check out the official synopsis and the teaser poster below:

The Rocker tells the story of a failed drummer who is given a second chance at fame. Robert “Fish” Fishman is the extremely dedicated and astoundingly passionate drummer for the eighties hair band Vesuvius, who is living the rock n’ roll dream until he is unceremoniously kicked out of the band. Twenty years after his rock star fantasies are destroyed, just when Fish has finally given up all hope, he hears that his nephew’s high school rock band A.D.D. is looking for a new drummer. They reluctantly make him the newest member of the band, giving him a chance to reclaim the rock God throne he’s always thought he deserved, and taking the young band along for the ride of their lives.

Emma Stone looked like a musician in Superbad. That’s a good pick. The trailer has me worried. The movie looks too Apatowesque with the Jonah Hill lookalike. Corny. The manager guy knocking on the groups door is a ripoff of Paul Rudd.

Got a small feeling that it was originally written as a Jack Black School Of Rock rip-off with American Pie references thrown into the mix. Once 40 year Old Virgin came out it got rewritten. The basic story sounds funny. I think this is a bad trailer.
