The Presidential Debate

What is Movie News After Dark? It’s a nightly movie news column that isn’t so political. Unless you consider watching the Presidential Debate and imagining the candidates as Muppets to be political…

We begin this evening with the nation’s top story — no, not Saturday Night Live — the Presidential Debate. That will undoubtedly be the reason why tonight’s column is coming in late. And because I love hyperbole, I’m not only watching the debate, but also reading Andrew Sullivan having an aneurism and watching CNN’s talking heads go crazy. Also, someone said Lincoln. That movie is out in November. But enough politics, lets do the movie news…

1. Read this about Looper - The big guy, Film Crit Hulk, has written a long-form piece about the journey from Comic-Con to opening well for Rian Johnson and Looper. It’s a great, firmly typed read.

2. Fantastic Fest Critic’s Choice – The best of the press, including a number of FSR contributors, talk about the best movies of Fantastic Fest. High on the list: Holy Motors, Batman!

3. Berberian Trailer Studio - Speaking of Fantastic Fest, check out this trailer for Berberian Sound Studio, another very well reviewed film from the recently ended festival. I miss it already.

4. Captain America’s New Girl – The search is on for a female lead for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Candidates include the lovely and talented Allison Brie (Community), Game of Thrones fire-breather Emilia Clarke, Jessica Brown Findlay of Downton Abbey, Teresa Palmer and Imogen Poots.

5. Kickstart This: Street art and activism – If tonight’s debate has you feeling a bit political, you may want to donate some of your future tax cuts to this film, White Walls Say Nothing, a doc about street art and activism in Buenos Aires.

6. SHIELD gets new members – According to just about every report we’ve seen, the upcoming SHIELD TV show will have all kinds of new characters. TV Line has some specifics, including a few soldiers, a few witty characters and some classic Whedon archetypes.

7. Mondo Dune – The folks at Mondo have three new posters going on sale at a random time tomorrow, including one for Jodorowsky’s Dune (pictured below) by Kilian Eng, Beyond the Black Rainbow and Wrong by Jay Shaw. Some high-res close-up photos are now available on their blog.

8. Prometheus spoilers – The new Blu-ray trailer for Prometheus has some major spoilers. Jen Yamato at a (nicely) newly designed Movieline explores. And here’s the trailer. Serious spoilers abound:

9. All the drinks on Mad Men – It’s been a long day. Lets all have a drink:
