Great news, everyone. Pacific Rim 2 is alive and well.

Bad news, everyone. Guillermo del Toro will not be directing Pacific Rim 2.

Great news, everyone. Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight will step in to direct Pacific Rim 2.

Working from a script by Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaihts, DeKnight will make his directorial debut in the follow-up to 2013’s Pacific Rim. Before serving as executive producer and head writer on Marvel’s Daredevil for Netflix, DeKnight created the Starz series Spartacus, and has written, directed and produced numerous shows including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Dollhouse. As they would say in the sports world, he comes from the Joss Whedon coaching tree. It’s actually a wonder that he hasn’t made the jump to feature films yet, but he’s been pretty busy delivering high quality television.

According to Guillermo del Toro’s Twitter feed in the wee hours of last night, there’s plenty of reason to be excited. Beyond, of course, the fact that Pacific Rim is getting a sequel, an idea we long thought was completely dead.

We’re game for whatever del Toro means when he says “we can expand big!” Especially if that means we get any kind of Jaeger/Kaiju action that is on par with this hallway fight scene from Daredevil:

No more details are available for Pacific Rim 2, but 2018 feels about right if we were guessing at release dates. We’ll keep you informed as more details are announced.
