He made one of the best sci-fi movies of 2009, and quite possibly the past few years, and now Duncan Jones is saying that he’s running into brick walls as he chases down financing for his next project, a Blade Runner inspired sci-fi film set in Berlin called Mute.

In an interview with Australia’s The Age, Jones admitted that the project — which will require a much larger budget than the simple, but simply beautiful Moon — is “mired in financing difficulties.” According to the report, he’s still quite optimistic about the situation, saying that “every problem is proof that we’re planning a movie very different from the norm.”

I don’t know about all of you, but I hope that Jones finds himself a financier soon, and I’m almost sure that he will. He didn’t make it rain with Moon, but did succeed in making an efficient, moderately budgeted film that fought through limited release hell to make back its money and then some.

Co-written with Mike Johnson (Sherlock Holmes), the story follows a mute bartender looking for his abducted girlfriend in a future Berlin. Jones has said that he hopes to find a budget of $25 million for Mute.

This seems to be a huge problem with the Hollywood machine. God forbid, someone might come up with a great story that's challenging and entertaining and dare I say it? Original? Duncan Jones is an amazing filmmaker and you'd think someone would step up to the plate and finance any film he's attached to, but no, Hollywood is stuck in mediocre remake hell. Hey that's a great idea for a movie! But what am I thinking? That could never get made because it's original!

Anyway, I'm always pushing my buddy, Desi Singh's film, "Signed in Blood," which is having a few problems getting all the financing closed as well. Anyway, if you like killer sci-fi stories and great looking and talented actors, you just might find his project interesting.
