Monsters vs. Aliens Leads $58 Million Attack on Box Office
Box Office By John Cairns on March 30, 2009 | (8) Comments
Well, as correctly predicted by myself, it was indeed the attack of the 50-foot woman in 3-D at the box office. Monsters vs. Aliens won the weekend with a haul of $58 million, topping Watchmen for the best weekend opening of 2009 so far. Also, from what I gather, this may rank as the biggest 3-D opening of all time with , although it’s hard to say as the release showed up in 3-D in 1,550 of its over 4,100 theaters. It’s estimated the 3-D version could have taken in around $32 million.
In other news the horror genre keeps on rolling along as The Haunting in Connecticut finished with $23 million, one of the better horror showings in 2009. That has to be the other big story of the week — the fact that people keep on shelling out for horror movies. And this weekend’s big box office disappointment has to be 12 Rounds, which only brought in $5.3 mil.
Here’s a look at the final numbers.
- Monsters Vs. Aliens – $58,200,000
- The Haunting in Connecticut – $23,010,000
- Knowing – $14,705,000
- I Love You, Man – $12,600,000
- Duplicity – $7,556,000
- Race to Witch Mountain – $5,637,000
- 12 Rounds – $5,300,000
- Watchmen – $2,755,000
- Taken – $2,700,000
- The Last House on the Left (2009) – $2,611,000
So that’s the weekend box office — and sorry it took so long to post this update. I understand the website was taken over by a few monsters and aliens over the weekend, but it seems the tech people have taken care of them.
