Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell Might Be Villains in Iron Man 2

Rourke and Rockwell for Iron Man 2

I’m usually not so direct, but the title says it all as both actors are in serious talks with Marvel to take on roles as villains in the sequel to one of the biggest movies of last year.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rourke is capitalizing seriously from his success in The Wrestler by circling a role as the main villain – a Russian bad ass covered in tattooes that THR is speculating as Whiplash. Variety is reporting the same thing, but speculating that the character is the Crimson Dynamo.

Since Crimson Dynamo is Russian, and, you know, since Whiplash is a woman – our money is on Rourke playing the former. Of course, it would be awesome for Rourke to stretch himself as an actor by playing a female. I also realize that there has been a male Whiplash, but so far he hasn’t played a major role in the Iron Man universe. Of course, we never know what sort of curve balls Marvel Studios might be throwing us.

THR is also claming that Sam Rockwell might be on board for a rare studio film appearance, speculatively playing Justin Hammer – the billionare, criminal financier counterpart to Tony Stark who bankrolls costumed super-villains and there weaponry needs. If they stay true to source material, Rockwell would have to take on a sweet British accent.

What do you think about Rourke or Rockwell joining the project? What about the villains? Are you okay not seeing Fin Fang Foom in the sequel? Me neither.

  • Mark Scarlotti was the first Whiplash. Then he was the first Blacklash. Then he died and the next Whiplash was a woman. The current Whiplash is a new woman and her husband is Blacklash. They wear dominatrix type getups.
  • I don't think I would like to see Mickey R in an S&M get up maybe if he grows his hair and braid it and then not shower for at least 2-3 weeks he might resembles Dog the Bounty Hunter. LOL! The idea with a counter part to tony stark sounds good and having Crimson Dynamo as the villian would be good too. It seems they are pushing all of the Marvel characters to show up in IM2 including Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Nick Fury. I'm wondering when are we going to hear or see Mandarin in the movie?
  • Sam Rockwell - Yes please. I think he's a good addition. Mickey Rourke? I'll go against the grain and not be completely sold on him. The problem I see with his two options are this: Crimson Dynamo is basically an Iron Man clone, he's another powered suit. I don't want Iron Man to only fight powered suits that pretty much look like him. Whiplash. Whiplash is kind of a silly character I think. I'm sure they can make it work, though I wouldn't mind the series being more like Iron Man - Director of SHIELD, where his enemies are more realistic - terrorists, etc. Sure, throw in the odd super villain, and a few cheesey ones to be dispatched for giggles, but Iron Man can stay fairly grounded in terms of reality.

I'm not Sam but I Rockwell
  • Now they have to use them properly for the roles. Even the best actors can be miscast, look at Batman Beyond.
  • An Arrested Development reference? Touche Cole.
  • Yea Batman Beyond was not even made and the casting was bad. I knew WB wanted to reboot the franchise from the very beginning so they diss that idea but I wouldn't mind them making Batman Beyond.

This news is best news ever. Rourke and Rockwell are two of the greatest actors alive. Rockwell rocked the hell out of "Assassination of Jesse James", holding his own against the brilliant Brad Pitt. The scene where Pitt reveals what he did to Rockwell is one of the best ever. This made "Iron Man 2" go from a "wanna see it" to possibly attending the midnight screening.
  • Thank you!!

Seems interesting. I really like Sam Rockwell and I think he's quite underrated as an actor. But who cares about these guys? Who's gonna be Black Widow is what I wanna know!
