McG Confirmed as the Slayer of the ‘Terminator’ Franchise

First there were the rumors that there would be another trilogy added to the Terminator saga. Then there was the news that James Cameron would not be involved. Then we heard that Arnie wouldn’t, as was so fond of saying, “be back”. Now there’s this. According to moviehole, McG is confirmed as directing the new Terminator, Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins.

The premise of the movie sounds great, at least on paper. Skynet has become self-aware, the apocalypse has come and John Connor is organizing the resistance to fight back. Excellent, it’s sounding wonderful. Then you hear that none of the cast members from Terminator 3 are coming back and things begin to look dodgy. I’m sure that McG has to have done something right, after all he did just convince Warner Brothers to let him loose on the opening of what could be a brand new trilogy, translating into lots of loot for the suits, but will whatever he did be enough? Is McG really good enough to step into the shoes of James Cameron and play with iconic characters like the Terminator and John Connor (ok moreso the Terminator)? Or will it just be another nail in the coffin of the franchise, the way T3: Rise of the Machines was? With the “Sarah Connor Chronicles” about to hit tv screens this January and a whole new audience waiting to be brought to the Terminator fold, is now the best time to risk it all on McG? I’m not sure I’m convinced, but I do know that I liked Charlie’s Angels more than I liked Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.

Wait. Oh dear, he worked on that too.

It's the final nail in the coffin. Terminator was done and over with after T2. Without Cameron and Arnold, the series is just another B-movie crap-athon without any merit of any kind. We're talking about a man vs. machine series of films that came long before The Matrix. We're talking about a series of movies that changed the way movies are made, not once but twice. I weep for what T3 could've been if James Cameron had gotten the chance to bring his entire vision to the screen.
