20th Century Fox, in their desperate attempts to corner the market on talking animals (Alvin and the Chipmunks) and dog movies headlined by Owen Wilson (Marley & Me), have released the first trailer for Marmaduke today via Yahoo Movies. The story of a teenage dog (voiced by Wilson) who likes to surf, hang it loose and kick it with his homies, Marmaduke is the long-awaited (but not really awaited) adaptation of the popular newspaper comic strip started in 1954 by Brad Anderson. It is the story of the oblivious Great Dane, who is moving into a new neighborhood with his loving family.

The Tom Dey (Failure to Launch) directed film features Marmaduke as a live-action, CG-enhanced talking dog. And by the looks of it — via this super-short teaser — the dog won’t be that funny. Chances are though, that kids will eat it up — as will FSR critic Kevin Carr, who always loves that crap.

Alas, I’ve said too much. Behold the teaser below for Marmaduke, which hits theaters on June 4, 2010.

Side note: Is anyone else getting a live-action Scooby Doo, Cats & Dogs vibe from this movie?

Great. It's not enough that I have to put up with an unfunny one-panel comic strip in the morning paper, I have to deal with an unfunny one-joke movie now as well. Given a choice between seeing this movie and smashing my penis between two cinderblocks, I'd have to sit down and think it over.

Oh God Yes. The inevitable success of this flick all but guarantees a green light for a Family Circus movie.

Ah, thanks for the offer, Vikram, but that was a metaphor and nothing more. And no pun noticed.

Well if you knew you were going to make both 'Marley and Me' and 'Marmaduke', you'd be having suicidal thoughts too. Those movies were definately not made out of love.
