There’s nothing we can do about it, it’s marketing for companies to make more money like a sale pitch. Logically, they should of brought out both version since this is not a recent movie. They know that fans will buy both because there are some clips that you will not find in the extended but will find in the theatrical version.

Before buying anything I asled myself, what do I want out of this? And that is the extended version which I can wait for. Like said, nothing is stoping the hardcore fans from renting the theatrical version : ))

Why would anyone with half a brain buy this version on blueray , when with a little patience later in the year, there going to release the full special extended editions. It's really a no brainer. save yourdosh loftr fans for the definitive versions!

What people do not realize is that with Blu-Ray, you can have seamless transition between versions on the same disc. During play, or the menu, you can select “Extended” or “Theatrical” – the Blu-Ray player then selects the appropriate content to play as you watch.

Blu-Ray discs hold 50GB of data, versus 8.4GB per DVD. A single Blu-Ray disc is sufficient for each movie. The “Extended” data is simply extra video on the disc that is seamlessly inserted into the “Theatrical” video as you watch. This is the layman's definition of some Blu-Ray features.

Yeah I understand where you're coming from (I read the books to. You're not the only Tolkien fan here :-D ) but I still see the regular versions as the better overall films. The Extended were closer to the books, but the Theatrical is the superior film, at least in my opinion.

Oh well, to each their own.

Not only do I think they are better, but I consider them the definitive editions. As far as I am concerned, the others don't even exist.

Most of that “extra stuff” is stuff straight from the books. I would go so far as to call it fan service, and I can understand why a lot of that stuff was cut. That said, being a zealous fan of Tolkien for pretty much my entire life, I eat up all of those little touches and nods to the literary source. I won't ever argue with someone who prefers the standard editions, but they just simply don't have enough “Middle Earth” for me. :)

Figures, they have been doing this for awhile. I mean look at all the Watchmen dvds out there. It is a rip off but people will buy them. I own the theatrical and extended editions. Finaly got my hands on a bd player, don’t know if I’ll actually buy them again. I’m not buying movies in bd that I already own. I just don’t want to spend all that money, unless it’s somehting really special to me.

Do you really think that the Extended Editions are better? I thought they were good, but they felt very padded with extra stuff. I think the theatrical edition is still the best version out there.

Warners Bros is at least telling us the Extended Version will follow, right?. They could not say anything and lets us purge the Theatrical Version, then release the Ultimate set. If you don't have the patience to wait for your “precious”, then you deserve to double-dip.

I waited for the DVDs and was better for it. Not sure why, I had the money and wanted to see them again. Guess I figured they would issue a cool set, which they did, just happened to be the extended versions.

The Extended Cut BD copy better be intense for my purchase. DVDs look spectacular on my PS3 and other than having the whole movie on one disc, I’ll pass.

Agree wholeheartedly. By not including the extending footage the Blu-Ray release is taking a step backwards. They are hoping that people will assume this is the definitive version and pick it up anyway.

you could always rent, just to get a taste and then spend the big bucks later when they realease the better additions. still though, i wish things were the way they were back when there was only 1 addition of a movie and it had all the special features anyone could want and it was the same price as another title that hardly had any.

I own the dvd extended editions but I don't think I have watched them yet… they are too long. But they look nice with my dvd collection.

“Fans should not have to buy it a second time.” – Neil, thank you for stating what should be obvious. Blatent Exploitation of the buying audience keeps people from buying DVDs. (You could also possibly argue that it drives people towards pirating but that is a sister argument.)

Personally I've cut back on certain purchases fully expecting to get a bigger/better version down the line.

I see no problem with having both the theatrical and the extended cuts on Blu-Ray. Some people prefer the theatrical cut.

Fans don't have to buy it a second time. They can just wait instead of whining about it.

Agreed. As the resident LotR expert (fanatic) here at FSR, I will be waiting for the Extended Editions before I buy them on Blu-ray.
