Like it Or Not: There’s Going to be a Third Tomb Raider

Because You Asked For It

It would appear that the lackluster Tomb Raider franchise is being rebooted (and I use that term loosely given the fact that we have yet to see or hear anything that would indicate that the next film would be in any way better than the previous two mediocre features) with Warner Bros. replacing Paramount at the project’s helm.

A third Tomb Raider flick was rumored as early as December 2006, when Eidos Interactive (a Production/Distribution Company behind the first two films) executive producer, Ian Livingston, revealed in an interview: “There’s a possibility- we’ve been talking to Paramount, who’ve agreed to assign a scriptwriter. That’s nowhere near the green-light process, but it’s a very healthy start to have a scriptwriter which they’re going to pay serious amounts of money to write the first script.”

Up until this month, over two years had passed with little to nothing being revealed about a new Lara Croft picture. Now Cinematical has announced that the producer behind Terminator: Salvation, Dan Lin, has signed on to the project and rumors have started circulating that Megan Fox might play the lovely Lara in Angelina’s absence.

That’s right, folks, Angie won’t be coming back a third time as the buxom brunette heroine—for some fans of the previous films this might come as a shocking disappointment, but for others this news, combined with the Warner Bros. label (think The Dark Knight, people), gives hope that the unnamed third Tomb Raider project might succeed in breathing a little more life into the video-game-turned-silver-screen star than has been seen previously.

While Cinematical thumbs their nose at the idea of Transformers hottie Megan Fox appearing as Lara Croft, we like to think that there’s more to Megan than meets the eye… well, at any rate, we like what meets the eye, so we’re willing to go on a little faith here.

What do you think? Could the rumors be more true than we thought?

  • Wait, can Megan Fox's breasts even do a British accent?
  • lmao. Good one Cole.

I'm not expecting much from this. The games were a lot of fun, but I can honestly say that I didn't play a single one that had ANY instance where I said "Hey, this would make a good movie!' They are never going to take the time to do it right.

If they want to do a successful Tomb Raider movie, they need to work on a great script. That should be the priority. Afterwards, just find a hot chick who has some acting chops. We're not looking for a Meryl Streep type acting skill, more like Elizabeth Banks. Not that I'd cast her, just saying an actress with her type acting skills, no less.

Stick her in super short shorts and a tight white shirt, and guys everywhere will see it. The first time will be because of the hot chick thing. All the other times will be because of the great story they never expected to see (okay, maybe it will be about the hot chick thing lol) That would make enough movie to have the whole thing be worth while.
  • Good one cole.

How about Rhona Mitra from Underworld 3?

    She's British. She has breasts.

She does that monotone thing like Angelina does that people mistake for acting.

    It's a win-win!
  • I think she's a good actress for action roles.
  • I think so too. Doomsday showed she can shoot guns and kick ass. She'd be a perfect Lara Croft.
  • This could be a huge franchise like James Bond, so why not?

    Please NO Megan Fox.
  • Nevernude
you are kidding about tomb raider becoming a james bond like franchise right? please say you're joking!
i have never seen any movie potential in Tomb Raider! ever! like a poor man's Indiana Jones..
there are far better games out there more deserving of movies..Halo, Gears of War, Bioshock..etc..

I see you only started playing video games since the xbox. Tomb Raider is an awesome game franchise and well deserving of a movie. It's had its ups and downs, and isn't extremely popular in these days, but the fact that it continued through the years is a testament to its greatness. It also has a way better setup for a franchise than the others you mentioned as it doesn't have a defined plot(regarding plots, YOU must be joking recommending Halo or Gears). It's only a basic setting - rich british girl is an action hero who fights bad guys through a series of cool adventures. It has the potential to be a James Bond where others don't - especially now with an actor switch up.

However, I don't see this movie doing anything spectacular anyway, so what do I care.
  • Amen. I think it would be incredible to have a large franchise carried by a female hero. Just...not by Megan Fox.

And I'm torn about Rhona Mitra, because, sure, it would be awesome to make Fure interview her again purely for how awkward the first time was. But, I'd have to interview her again, too, and that was even more awkward.
  • We are actually throwing Jessica Biel's name into the mix.
