Even though he’s currently performing on Broadway, actor and all-around tough guy Liev Schreiber is looking back toward the world of the silver screen. After roles in Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock, Fox’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the upcoming thrillers Salt and Repo Men, Schreiber is setting his sights on the real life story behind the Rocky movies.

Chances are that you’ve never heard of Chuck Wepner, the Bayonne Bleeder. Cited as the inspiration for Sly Stallone’s iconic Italian punching bag, Wepner was a fighter from Bayonne, New Jersey who once went fifteen rounds with Muhammad Ali. It is said that this fight, which took place in Cleveland on March 24, 1975, was seen on television by Stallone, who was so inspired by the man’s tenacity and heart that he wrote Rocky.

While Schreiber did not mention to MTV when this film would go into production, he did say that he already has a director attached to the project, The Devil and Daniel Johnston helmer Jeff Feuerzeig. “That’s the next thing I’d like to do,” Schreiber said. “It’s just a remarkable, hilarious film and I hope we get to make it.”

Here’s hoping he gets it into production. Nothing wrong with a good ole’ underdog story featuring a solid actor. Also, here’s hoping they call the movie The Bayonne Bleeder. That would quite simply be awesome.
