antichrist-vontrier

With press for his latest film Antichrist ongoing here in the US, director Lars Von Trier has been talking about his next project, a “psychological disaster movie” that appears to be coming together very quickly.

The director is describing the film as a ‘psychological disaster film’ (which would be a fitting description for Antichrist, but Variety is saying that Planet Melancholia will center around “an enormous planet.. that looms threateningly close to Earth.” The Hollywood Reporter adds that Von Trier may be “moving into Roland Emmerich territory.”

Producer Peter Aalbaek Jensen did add that the film would be “a mix of spectacular, cinematic imagery with Dogme-style handheld camerawork — a combination seen in Antichrist.” Jensen also said the new film would be “romantic, in a Lord Byron sort of way.”

As for Von Trier, he had only one comment about the film to THR: “No more happy endings!”

Sadly, there are no more details to be known about this project. It is a fascinating premise, and when combined with the chaotic creative mind of Von Trier, we have a project worth knowing more about. I would bet that we will continue to get bits and pieces as the promotion of Antichrist continues over the next few weeks. But it might be several months before we have anything concrete.

Von Trier will write and direct the $7.4 million-budgeted English-language feature. Shooting is scheduled for next summer in Germany and Sweden.
