With the release of the nearly dismissible thriller comedy Killers (the one with Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl) coming up this Friday and Lionsgate not screening it for critics, bloggers or the like, we need something to talk about. So we’re talking a film with a very similar premise — James Mangold’s Knight and Day. It’s an easy thing to do, as Knight and Day looks leagues better than Killers on every level. It has better star power with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, both having had their share of success in the world of action with Mission: Impossible and Charlie’s Angels, respectively. It’s caliber of filmmaker is higher, with James Mangold telling great character stories (Walk the Line) and delivering some good shoot ‘em up action (3:10 to Yuma) in past projects.

But on top of that, Knight and Day simply has better energy. It’s evident in this third trailer, which hit the web over the weekend. There’s a sense of wry humor about it that doesn’t come off as cheap and some real, bonafide action sequences. If it delivers on this promise, it could very well be the action-comedy of the summer. That, and I can’t fault any movie that uses its poster design to evoke Saul Bass.

Watch the latest trailer below. Knight and Day is in theaters on June 25, 2010.
