King Crowns New ‘Mist’ Ending Shocking, Amazing

Frank Darabont

FirstShowing.net recently heard from horror master Stephen King that the new ending from Frank Darabont’s adaptation of The Mist is balls out awesome. No matter how I phrase it, I won’t be able to say it better than King himself, so here you go:

Frank wrote a new ending that I loved. It is the most shocking ending ever and there should be a law passed stating that anybody who reveals the last 5 minutes of this film should be hung from their neck until dead.

So there you, that’s some serious love. And I’m with him on the killing part. If anyone spoils the ending for me before I see this film I will slay you! The Mist stars Tom Jane and hits theaters Wednesday, the 21st, and looks to be a scary, thrilling, and well executed thriller. The film follows a group of survivors holed up in a general store as a mist rolls in, bringing with it all manners of pains, deaths, and monstrosities.

Darabont is probably best known for his directing of The Shawshank Redemption, a film that received wide critical praise. Or, if you prefer, as the genius behind the adaptation of The Green Mile. Darabont also served as the screenplay writer on The Mist and unless Mr. King is lying to us, he’s done an excellent job.

Stay tuned to FSR for Mist reviews as I know that at least one of us (this guy!) is catching this bad boy as soon as possible.

Also, you can see the entire press conference over at ShockTillYouDrop, our new Crave Film Channel comrades.

I prefeer to, well...kill my son that see how those fucking monsters cut him on pieces, GREAT ENDING, i got shocked and with my hand on my head saying: "OH NO NO..SHIT! NO! DAMN! one of my favorite movie now

I have been a huge fan of this novella. I even thought of pitching a Blair Witch shaky cam movie idea, based on the boy getting a video camera for his birthday, the day of the storm. He would shoot the various events as they happened and the father would borrow it to use the camera's night vision in the backroom, eventually finding the hanging soldiers. At the end of the film, the camera would be left at the Cafe, nearly out of batteries, and you see the survivors get back in the car and drive away.

The movies ending was shokcing, but felt ill timed. I would have liked more shots of them driving past desolation to give a sense of time and distance. A slow drive by a pile of cars at a gas station crawling with bugs. Cut to the gas meter. Drive by another pile of cars that gets stomped on by the Huge Creature. Cut to a water bottle emptied. Finally the car stops. Exterior shot of it lurching to a halt and just sitting there for a full 20 seconds. Shots of the interior as eyes glance at one another, then finish the movie as it is, but with a longer pause after he falls out of the car and before the military arrives. Have no sound then, he stumbes out into the white. Quick cuts from around him as he screams. His mind collapses and he falls to the ground (possibly unconscious, possibily dead), and then show the military fade in. The treads of the tanks missing him as soldiers walk by... Don't show the mist fading away, just the military arriving, perhaps to save the world, but perhaps not.

So, yeah, the hard fighting characters gave up too quickly and too easily. As a new father, however, I fully realize that killing your own child is aobut as bad as it can get.

The rest of the adaptation was very well done I thought.
  • I am still shocked.... kinda like after 'I Am Legend'... I don't know what to say...When they drove off in the car, and the people in the store watched them leave (right before the ending), I was ready to see the store people get destroyed, but instead.. nothing happened! This was a sweet movie and the ending is like much like a PANIC ATTACK! if anyone here had a real panic-attack than you can really feel and get the end... by the way, google the song 'Hope In A Hopeless World'... love it and listen to it.. cheers to all of you.... I am ready for 'THE MIST 2' to come out.... that would be sick!
    GOOD NIGHT

The new ending did not work with the overall story. I had a feeling it wasn't the original ending because it didn't make sense for the characters to behave that way. (SPOILERS AHEAD). The people in the car were the one's so determined to survive and help others, yet in a split second they all agree to commit suicide.... I just don't buy it. Especially the main character killing his son. I still liked the movie, but the last 5 minutes did not fit.

--OOPS !! DARING departure, not darting-- sorry all !! fumble fingers !!

To Jesse and Whaaaat?, and P'd Off, and DrWax------ Listen up youall !!!all of you guys obviously didnt get the movie--. Most of it WAS the cookie cuttered version of most horror flicks--the effects the creatures the blood, the fighting back... it is THE ENDING which is the darting departure which makes this movie so incredibly good!!! True, things could have been done differently. Honestly, what is there to do-- Go out and try to survive--did you MISS the first half of the movie ? They had no food, no real weapons, no real idea what else could be out ther ? Besides, seeing that huge one that shook the SUV would pretty much kill any hope you might have left !!! The whole point is this--Not all situations end well, the hero doesnt always save the day, the good guys dont always win, the boy doesnt always get the girl try PAYING ATTENTION!!! did all of you flunk English Composition ???
  • EmpressZorak
I also strongly believe that a sequel COULD be made--IF they take the time and do it right-- David could be in it too... The whole movie reminded me a lot of a Koontz book I read called Seize The Night--several similarities, you all ought to check it out !
  • EmpressZorak
WRONG--those that look a little deeper into the story, read between the lines, true horror fans, and TRUE King fans DO know better !!! Better than someone like yourself who obviously can read a good story, but just doesnt get what it means.. Did you get an F in English composition? Think about this--not all things are happy endings, not all of life is a Friends episode--Its about time that someone made a movie with such dark overtones!! Shawshank Redemption, Misery, and Pet Sematary were all fairly good. I honestly dont think you are a true horro fan--Think !, be introspective, ask questions, dig deeper !!!

Seems like everyone that read the book, like myself hated the ending! Those that didn't know any different liked the ending. Seems that all S. Kings that have been turned into movies have SUCKED except 'Stand by Me' {book:short story called 'The Body'}If you haven't read the book get it and read it it is still very good.

to STEVE--- were we not paying attention to the movie at all ?? If you go outside, you pretty much DIE--Remember the group who went out, and the guy tied to the rope? They survived maybe 200 feet--and BANG, hit by whatever monsters--YOU DONT KNOW WHATS OUT THERE !!! Do you honstly think you have the luxury of time to dink around, with THAT many unknowns ? Gee the nearest germ warfare center just MIGHT not be close enough---
By the way, for all you ANti-Republican or Anti Establishmant types--heres another latent theme in the movie-- Trust The Governemt, even thoug it screws up, it still saves the day--nevermind the thousands of unnecessary deaths-- How bout that one, eh ?
