Originally titled A Couple of Dicks, the recently untitled buddy cop comedy from Warner Bros. and director Kevin Smith has been through the titling ringer. According to the director in several previous interview, WB went looking for a new title after the major networks refused to air commercial advertisements for a movie with the word “Dicks” in it.

But you already knew that. What you’ve been waiting for is the new title. Thanks to the folks over at The Film Stage, who appear to have pulled it from a Warner Bros. Exhibitor site (in an announcement that its trailer is attached to Sherlock Holmes). The new title for the Bruce Willis and Tracey Morgan led comedy is Cop Out which works on several levels.

For one, it is about cops. Additionally, the changing of the title is a “cop out” of sorts. It makes me giggle. As well, did I mention that the first trailer will be attached to Sherlock Holmes along with the previously reported Iron Man 2 trailer and a new trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Inception? That, and I have first hand knowledge that Holmes is a quality flick. Makes it easy to recommend seeing Holmes on Christmas, doesn’t it?

What do you think of Cop Out as the new title for Smith’s movie?

  1. Jeff R Hall says:

You would think that Smith would have learned from Zack & Miri that titles with double entendres do not go over well.

Hopefully this will help him break his $30 Million dollar ceiling.

Well, ZACH AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO was not, by any means, a double entendre. It was merely an entendre…

Personally I feel that while Kevin's new project has been somewhat plauged by the name changes (and the latest being rather fitting!) the entire film should work out well, hopefully Bruce Willis will be performing on par and I am sure he will be excellently teamed with Tracy Morgan :)

  5. Hmm. I don't really know what to think. There were a few promising bits of comedy, like handcuffing SWS to the bumper, but overall the trailer just had a stock feel to it. It seems like every new buddy cop movie claims to be “not your average buddy cop movie”, when in actuality that's exactly what it is.
