Josh Olson to Revive Spirit of Dirty Harry with ‘One Shot’

Josh Olson, the Oscar-nominated writer of A History of Violence, is set to pen the screen version of One Shot, a suspense novel about an ex-army policeman. Josh has indicated, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, that he wants to bring back the “tough, smart, action-oriented” spirit of the Dirty Harry movies.

I had just finished watching the first two Dirty Harry movies on Blu-ray,” Olson said. “And I thought, ‘No one’s making movies like that anymore.’”

I was on the cusp of my teenage years when my father sat me down and had me watch the first Dirty Harry movie. I was totally enthralled.  There are certain actors who command the screen in a way that no one coming after can possibly equal. Eastwood is one of those actors, along with Harrison Ford, Gary Cooper, and Spencer Tracy. These are the guys who defined masculinity for whole generations, and while they are often copied, they will never be surpassed.

Having said that, I think the reason you don’t see Hollywood making Dirty Harry-type films anymore is because Clint Eastwood isn’t making them. So if the “badass with a gun” genre is going to be revived, I believe the key to success is finding the actor who can take it on and own it. So far, for this generation of actors, I’m at a loss to suggest who that actor might be. Any suggestions?

Do you think you know who could fill the tough-guy-Dirty-Harry-type shoes for Hollywood? Well, do ya, punk?

The only guy I can think of is Russell Crowe. A good example is LA Confidential. He was tough as nails in that movie.
  • I'd have to reject Russell out of hand. He's an Aussie. And no matter how good he puts on an American accent, you still can't watch him without thinking "Aussie" in the back of your mind. The actor has to be 100% American or I don't think it's going to work.

It would have to be a soild script along with a competent director to even make it a success, before you even cast the main character.

Bruce Will is the only person I could see pulling off the role but he is getting too old to play these parts.

Also if anyone says Collen Farrell as the lead in this thread I will whip out the .44 and Make Your Day....
  • I would have to disagree, Mister Hand. I think Christian Bale played like, 3 roles as an "American" before anyone realized he was Welsh.

I am interested in what deep psychological issue you have with Australians, though. ;)

Before "The Departed," I never would have thought I'd say Mark Wahlberg would be good for this sort of thing, but he was pretty good at being a respectable badass in that movie. No way anyone in this generation of actors could really pull off the grit that Eastwood did, but it would be interesting to see. Plus, Wahlberg did time.

But we can't rule out Kirk Cameron

How about an actor whose a little old, and already starred in some awesome kick ass films this year...wait for it...Robert Downey Jr. An old cop tired with corruption in the system who has a drinking problem and takes matters into his own hands to kick some serious criminal ass. I would definitely go see that

Robert Downey, Jr. pings the "definite possibility" meter, but...

Well, as awesome as he is, he's just a tad on the "posh" side. That's not to insinuate that he's in any way "swish." He's just a little bit... posh. Does anyone else know what I mean?

All decent selections, but for me...Josh Brolin all the way.

    Right age.
Can deliver a great line (see NO COUNTRY)
    Has the charisma.
Looks like he can handle himself (think his recent brawl in real life with cops...!)

Put him in a pair of shades and a tweed jacket - BINGO!

  • I think Clive Owen, would do a great job,

he did a great one, in shoot-em-up

he's got the badass appeal, and the acting chops...
