‘Dumb and Dumber’ Sequel to Center on Hilarity of Abandoned Children and Kidney Disease

It’s, in a word, perfect. Talk about Bobby and Peter Farrelly’s sequel to their comedy classic Dumb and Dumber had just about reached Ghostbusters 3 proportions (a special new realm occupied by Kick-Ass 2 talk) back in June when Jim Carrey dropped out, but the pair seem bound and determined to make the film happen, and with both Carrey and Jeff Daniels back as Lloyd and Harry.

Perhaps in a bid to get some real heat on the project, Bobby Farrelly fessed up to DigitalSpy some meaty details about the sequel, and they sound – this might sound crazy – actually completely spot-on. How often does that happen to a sequel? Straight out of the gate, Farrelly says that both Carrey and Daniels are set for this film, and gives fans the solemn vow that “we will make this movie.” Well, alrighty! But what’s it about?

In regards to the screenplay, Farelly shares that “we’ve already written the script,” a strangely nebulous statement considering that Sean Anders and John Morris were set for the gig back in October, and the film’s IMDb page includes both them and Stuck on You’s Bennett Yellin as the film’s screenwriters, though this could just be a case of Farrelly using the “royal we.” Semantics aside, whoever the hell wrote this thing has taken it in the exact right direction.

Farrelly said about the film’s plot:

“I can tell you that there is no growth out of either one of them and it’s 20 years later. What is funny about the original is that they’re grown men who are complete losers and when the studio came to us about a sequel, we were like, ‘Loads of kids are losers and they’re dumb.’ We didn’t see any value in the sequel so we backed out of it, but now these guys are in regular life and they’re still basically children at heart.

“The story revolves around the fact that one of them may have sired a child. They want to go and find the child because he’s having a kidney problem and he wants to ask him for one of his kidneys.”

Yes. Yes, exactly. Of course Harry and Lloyd have not grown at all and of course they have needs to fill that directly affect other people that they couldn’t give two craps about and of course they’re still going around being morons together. It’s strangely brilliant and prescient.

Farrelly also shared that they are “hoping” to shoot the film this spring to accommodate Daniels’ shooting schedule on The Newsroom. Of course, as the road to this new Dumb and Dumber has been a long and bumpy one, this might still be a wait-and-see production.
