He’s been on the short list, in talks, and now Summit is announcing that Bill Condon (the Oscar-nominated director of Dreamgirls (and Oscar-winning writer for Gods and Monsters) is going to be directing Twilight: Breaking Dawn.

The franchise has been nothing but a cash machine for Summit – practically building the production company to its current level all on its own. I say “nothing but” because the films have been severely lacking in the entertainment department. With the latest trailer for Twilight: Eclipse there’s at least hope in what David Slade has done for the flick, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Now, with Condon, the series is getting an Oscar pedigree, and some might be quick to claim this isn’t in Condon’s wheelhouse at all, but the man has been consistently writing and directing for a little over two decades in genres ranging from horror to biopic. The man has range.

Is that range right for Twilight? Who knows. Is anything right for Twilight? Is anything wrong for it? Taking the cynical route, it seems like the very worst the film can do is make a ton of money and be just as bad or better than the first film. Frankly, the bar is set really low there.

Something else to keep in mind is that Condon has hopped onto a franchise before mid-stream, but no matter what director joins up here, he or she would have to face the tonal continuity (at least to some degree) of what the other directors have done before. Plus, the production is keeping consistent on the writing front with Melissa Rosenberg writing all of the films.

There have been rumors and odd speculation about contracts not working out, but, rest assured sports fans that Breaking Dawn will definitely star Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner.
