Is Sucker Punch Next on Director Zack Snyder’s To Do List?

In a report today from Variety, a long list of studio projects were revealed to be in active production despite the labor negotiation stalemate between the Screen Actors Guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. According to the reports, studios are moving ahead with their 2010 slates, all of which include various high profile projects. Among the projects that Warner Bros. has on their short list is Sucker Punch, an actioner that was co-written by 300 and Watchmen director Zack Snyder and Steve Shibuya. Originally credited as writer, Snyder is now listed as director. And with a 2009 release date, it would appear that this is the next project on Snyder’s To-Do list.

Sucker Punch, which was announced back in March of 2007, is described as ‘Alice in Wonderland with machine guns.’ Of course, very little has been heard about the project since then. But according to Variety’s report, it is one of WB’s high-priority projects. At this point, the probability that this is accurate is very high, but we are currently in the follow-up process. For now, we know that the synopsis of the film is as follows:

A young girl is institutionalized by her wicked stepfather. Retreating to an alternative reality as a coping strategy, she envisions a plan which will help her escape from the facility.

We will, of course, keep you updated once we know more. For now though, this project sounds very interesting — cool premise combined with Snyder’s visual ability as a director could make for a very cool flick. Snyder’s wife Deborah (pictured above) is also set to produce the pic.

Sounds cool. But I'm not sure if Snyder shouldn't take a break from all that fantastical. Something somewhat grounded in reality (ala Dawn of the Dead) may keep him from going too "out-there".
