Is Space Chimps the Surprise Movie of 2008?
Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on May 23, 2008

The answer to the question in the title above is most likely “no”, but for the sake of drawing you in and getting you to read an article about animated chimps who fly around in space, I had to go there. We first told you about Space Chimps back in early April when Fox launched the film’s official website, but we haven’t heard or said
much about it since.
The truth is that a movie about chimp astronauts starring the voices of Andy Samberg, Cheryl Hines and Jeff Daniels is about as interesting as a movie about a mad-scientist assistant named Igor voiced by John Cusack. Then again, at least this film co-stars the vocal brilliance of Patrick Warburton — because as the old saying goes, every film “needs more Warburton.”
The reason that we are thinking about (and coincidentally, writing about) Space Chimps today is because our good friends over at Cinematical debuted the first teaser poster for the flick yesterday and it reminded us that this movie still exists. So at least for now, there is still hope that Space Chimps could swoop into theaters on July 18th and steal the summer box office. Seriously, it could.
To see the full, hi-res version of the poster, head on over to Cinematical. Also, should you feel that my dreams of seeing Space Chimps dominate the summer box office are way off-base, please feel free to tell me why below. I would be happy to argue this one out.
