Is Slusho Even Related to Cloverfield?

Posted by Neil Miller (neil@filmschoolrejects.com) on December 10, 2007

We have been reporting heavily over the past few weeks about the viral marketing campaign for Paramount’s upcoming monster movie Cloverfield. One element of said marketing campaign is a peculiar Japanese soft drink named Slusho! Today, my good friend Peter over at /Film began to wonder about whether Slusho! really has anything to do with Cloverfield at all. He went as far as to confirm with a non-studio source that it does not, in fact have anything to do with the film.

The new speculation from Peter’s source is that Slusho! is a completely seperate project under the umbrella of Lost and Cloverfield producer J.J. Abrams. Abrams’ company, Bad Robot currently has about 7 different projects (announced and unannounced) that are currently being worked on with the folks at Paramount — who are coincidentally the ones spreading around all of this Slusho! mumbo-jumbo. It could be that at least one of those projects has something to do with Slusho!, but it leads me to wonder when the hell Abrams would have time to work on a small side project. He is currently directing the eleventh installment of the Star Trek series that is due out at the end of 2008 and he has been attached to the Stephen King adaptation Dark Tower which is due in 2010. Not to mention the small television series (Lost) that he Executive Produces and writes. It would be simply amazing to think that he has been putting together a side project all this time.

But then again, as we have discovered this year with the marketing for Cloverfield, J.J. Abrams is one sneaky bastard. One thing we can say for sure — this Slusho! thing is a trip. If you get a few moments to explore slusho.jp, I would highly recommend it.

Up for Discussion: Do you buy this? Is Slusho! something completely separate from Cloverfield?

Slusho IS actually connected through an extremely complex series of ... connections.
The drink's special ingredient (Nectar of the Sea, I believe is the term) is distributed by
a company ( I've forgotten the name, but trust me) that is based in Japan.
Rob is moving to Japan for work with this company, so intense, informed, EDUCATED speculation states that the ingredient causes strange mutations, or the monster is some sort of guardian of the 'undersea ingredient.' Its a big, fun, alternate reality game that is completely based on clues found on the internet and real life occurrences.

The weird Slusho commercial, though probably not accessible through the DVD root menu, is on the DVD. I found it in the Video TS folder while "open"ing the DVD in "my computer." There were also other material too, like Jamie Lescano's obsessive video diaries and the drilling station news report. No joke.

haha so ya, basically i just NOW! watched cloverfield, and so i wanted to learn more about the ending and everything, so i googled some stuff, and my mind just exploded with everyhting everyone was saying

if you havnt seen the movie you prolly shouldnt read on until youve seen the ending

there was stuff like some satelite falls from space or something and awakes the creature in the very last scene at coney island

then theres all this talk about this Slusho! that it some how mutated or created this moster... which to me makes little sense, theres one question that i ve been trying to figure out, how can anyone figure this out from watching the movie?

-and of course the 2 monster thoery which i personally believe

the only thing i could figure out is that Rob is prolly going to work for Slusho since that all fits, ive also seen the satelite falling (or watever that is) in the last scene

i honestly dont want to know if all that is true, but if people are saying its true, i want to know how tehy know its true becuase the movie says nothing about where it came from it just seems like people are connecting lines where dots dont exist
