Internet Going Crazy for Really Crappy ‘Parnassus’ Picture

Posted by Dr. Cole Abaius (cole.abaius@filmschoolrejects.com) on February 21, 2009

I get it. We in the film blogging business basically sit around all day waiting for interesting news to hit or to wait for that flack to get back to you to give you a scoop or wait for the damned pizza delivery person to get to your apartment because he’s over forty minutes late, and holy hell how long does it take to bake a double-pepperoni and toss it in a car to drive four blocks?

Speaking of pizza, there’s a new “image” of several characters from The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus floating around the internet. It originated at the website of Nicola Pecorini, the DP on the film, and quickly hit a few popular film websites, some of which threw their own water mark on the image because quasi-copyright infringement is the only thing to do besides watch the Independent Spirit Awards on a lazy Saturday.

The image is really terrible, but it’s gotten a few people all a’twitter. But I’m warning you. It’s really underwhelming – not because it’s a bad picture, but because it’s just a random assortment of very small profile images floating magically out of an older image. Enjoy:

This is what people are going crazy for? Parnassus...

So, yeah, that’s it. And that’s as big as it gets. I can’t rag too much on the picture, because I’m sure Pecorini didn’t intend it to be promotional or even get this much traction, but I can rag on all the websites going wacky over it and throwing exclamation points onto the ends of their headlines about it.

What do you think?

  • Whether the picture is good or bad is evidently not important, it's gotten people talking about the movie again, and that's promotion for you.

As they say, there's no such thing as bad publicity. Empire Magazine did a feature on the film recently (either in the current issue or the last one) which was a rather interesting read and made me want to see the movie (and I'll be honest, 90% of the reason I'll be going is because of Heath).
  • The one thing that annoys me, is this link is obscure. One person found this, as far as I know, Russ at Chud found it so i linked to him. I didn't pretend i found it on my own by pointing straight to Pecorini's site. Not saying you're doing this because you clearly saw it several places first and that's kind of the point of your piece, but everyone points straight to the source suggesting to their audience they found it first. That shit is weaksauce and becoming rampant, rampant.
  • Thank God, my pizza finally got here.
  • And after all that.
  • yes a very random picture, that is getting high views. Interesting to see at least something come out of this film. Would be good to maybe see some better set pics or a teaser soon.
  • it's a first look...a lot of bloggers like the exclusives but I don't approve of the watermarking of any image..mainly because it ruins it...this image is only exciting for fans of either Gilliam or Heath...being both "I" find it interesting but far from something to go crazy over....considering little to no promotional material has been released since Gilliam's promo video any little scrap seems enough to rev people up...I'd like to see a teaser trailer before the end of March
