I Was Just Hadouken’d by the Cast List of Street Fighter

Street Fighter

For those of you who weren’t sure whether or not the fine gents over at Capcom were gonna put together a cast of stellar thespians to portray our favorite Street Fighter characters on-screen… well… I have news for yous bitches. The cast list for the film, being released for the 20th Anniversary of the classic videogame (even though the article acknowledges that the original SF came out 21 years ago and the film is not even due out until the 22nd Anniversary), will be chock-full of award-nominees.

Kristen Kreuk (Teen Choice Award nominee for “Smallville”) has been cast as Chun-Li, around whom the film will revolve, Michael Clark Duncan (one Oscar and two Blockbuster Entertainment Award nominations) is Balrog, Chris Klein (named 2001’s “Superstar of Tomorrow” at the Young Hollywood Awards) as Charlie Nash, and Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas (Be Cool) as Vega. Also notable is the addition of Neal McDonough as M. Bison, a part originally portrayed by the late, great Raul Julia. You’ll probably recognize McDonough from one of his several failed TV shows such as “Boomtown” and “Medical Investigation.”

I know that last paragraph was pretty heavily sardonic, but I just can’t help it. WHY ARE THEY MAKING STREET FIGHTER INTO A LIVE-ACTION MOVIE AGAIN?! There is also word of 20th Century Fox releasing this movie WORLDWIDE during the summer, 2009. I have some qualms here. One: Why are they making a live-action movie for theatrical release? Final Fantasy recently had success going straight to DVD in a CGI format that looked really cool and kept with the FF mythology already established. I can’t see any way for them to make the casual moviegoer interested in this film when the first film and a handful of Mortal Kombat movies were simply laughed off and mocked. Two: Who is putting their faith in Kristen Kreuk to lead a movie? She sucks. I like “Smallville”* as much as the next douche, but she always looks consistently bored on that show. I mean, not that “Smallville” is the most stimulating material, but neither is Street Fighter.

I don’t know, I guess the people at Hyde Park Entertainment and 20th Century Fox have decided that they can market this to people, just don’t be surprised when this makes $3.9 million at the box office its opening weekend.

Jean Claude Van Damme has neither confirmed nor denied if he’s returning as Guile. Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li hits theaters next summer.

* Is anyone else sick of “Smallville” and how it ruined the Superman timeline? I mean, they’ve already f*cked up Lex beyond repair, made Ma Kent a politician, and introduced Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, AND most of the Justice League. Clark already spends half his time at the Daily Planet (where he’s not employed) and Jonathan Kent has been dead for sometime–so come with it already. I know the producers and Tom Welling’s contract won’t allow Clark to wear the suit OR fly, but enough is enough. How many more bullets can Clark possibly step in front of?

  • I think that dude's name is Mark Dacascos. Most recently seen in "Codename: the Cleaner"--He definitely has the pedigree to compete with this cast.

NATHAN JONES as SAGAT! if they dont cast him or someone 90% alike him they've flopped. i'm not happy with the casting of vega either...unless they make him really dark, almost like the joker in the upcoming batman film. the 4 bosses need 2 be complete psychopaths, bison needs to be ruthless!

why do people complain about "ruining the superman timeline"? DC has, time and time again, messed with the consistency and events of the past through all the comics tv shows and movies already! think about it, if they just published the same exact story over and over again superman would have been a dead franchise 60 years ago!

and why wouldnt you want to see street fighter made into a live action movie? are you so scared it wont be good that you never even want them to try? i agree that the first one with jon-clod was terrible (i liked the first mortal kombat tho, even tho i dont care for the game). people seem to be so certain a story can never be done well in any other media type than the original that they dont even want to see them try, its sad really
