I like the idea of not having a limit, and requiring movies to reach a certain threshold, which is what they are going to do for the Original Song category. But the expansion has caused a lot of controversy : http://www.newsy.com/videos/oscars_and_then_the...
Having no-limit would solve the voting problem. With more movies up for scrutiny, a film can win with a smaller proportion of the vote, which could further alienate viewers.

Do we have to limit it to November/Decmber 2008 releases like the rest of the 2008 nominees? I'm guessing it would have looked something like this:

Benjamin Button, Slumdog Millionaire, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader, The Wrestler, Doubt, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Revolutionary Road, and Gran Torino.

Films I would like to have seen on that list, though, would have been The Fall, Pineapple Express, Iron Man and Wall-E. But I highly doubt that's what would have happened.

Ok! The academy put a 10 best picture nominees, let assume that Public Enemies is people favourite but than the winner is My sister keeper. still after the show, people gonna talk about it that Public Enemies should win the Oscar. even their enlist 20 film if you favourite not gonna win people will get piss!

That's exactly what will happen (well not Star Trek). This will change nothing at all. It's just letting the ugly girls come to the dance as well lol the beauty queen will still be the same.

I don't think it'll affect run time really as it's only the one award that's been beefed up but I think it's safe to say if it was ten last year then The Dark Knight would have been nominated but Slumdog still would have won. It won't change what people vote to be the best, it just lets the light be shone on five more.

Yeah, I can't remember 10 best picture worthy films from last year. I barely remember any year where the 5 that are up for best picture would actually be worthy best picture winners. Oh well, the academy awards are rigged anyway.

The fall deserved to get a best picture nom last year. It's bullshit the film didn't get best cinematography nom.

Lol I am fast on the reply when I'm not stacking shelves like a true student. I am surprised though that you like the film that got most of the flak (well except for The Reader). I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say that you've seen all five but any discerning fan can see the good points in a best picture nom. Not to say that these are the greatest ever but I guarantee that every film nominated is watchable and will have something worthy within. Frost/Nixon for example is a fantastically paced film that gives a boxing aura to an interview. 'Dumbdog' was always going to get the backlash but it is a worthy winner in my eyes. It perfectly encapsulated the time it was in and took hold and it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Milk was awesome too and I found The Reader very engaging. We do agree on Benjamin Button though I thought it was marvelous.

I think this is kinda pointless. If a movie couldn’t get enough nominations to be in the 5 nominated, how will it have a chance of winning?

Take last year for example. Lets just assume the 5 movies Dave added (The Dark Knight, Doubt, The Wrestler, Wall-E and Gran Torino) got nominations as well as the ones actually nominated. I doubt any of these would have won against Slumdog.

Merit isn’t the problem, it’s just we don’t need to bloat the category any more. Last year was a pretty good year for movies overall, as was 2007, but what happens when we hit a year where there are really very few movies that are Oscar worthy? This year so far is a pretty good example. I don’t want to see Star Trek (a good movie, but not Oscar material) get a nomination just so they can attract more potential ratings!

I think the bigger question is this. How will this affect the show? Will they cut out catagories from the main telecast (And regulate them to the part of the show not on the air.) to keep the show a “reasonable” lenght?

It seems clear that this is a nod to The Dark Knight. Would it/Could it have ever won? Of course not, but getting a nod would have been appropriate given the scale and quality of the film.

I think the bigger question is this. How much longer will the show run now that we have twice as many nominees? Will the Academy cut out other awards to keep the show at a semi-reasonable lenght?

From what I’ve read of this so far, I think this is a nod to The Dark Knight since it got snubbed last year. Would it/Could it have ever won? Of course not, but merely to get “noticed” would have been appropriate.
